Faux Absolute Positioning

Both approaches have their pros and cons. My teammates and I have developed a new positioning approach that gives us the best of both worlds. After quite a bit of experimenting and testing, it’s time to share the technique with the rest of the world and see how we can work together to improve it. I’m calling it “faux absolute positioning” after the faux columns technique that simulates the presence of a column. Why do we need another CSS layout technique? Article Continues Below Many website designs are based on a columnar layout with a header and footer. CSS Template Layout Module. Abstract A grid with four slots defined by ‘display: "aaaaaaa" "bccccdd"’.

CSS Template Layout Module

CSS is a simple, declarative language for creating style sheets that specify the rendering of HTML and other structured documents. This specification is part of level 3 of CSS (“CSS3”) and contains features to describe layouts at a high level, meant for tasks such as the positioning and alignment of “widgets” in a graphical user interface or the layout grid for a page or a window, in particular when the desired visual order is different from the order of the elements in the source document. Other CSS3 modules contain properties to specify fonts, colors, text alignment, list numbering, tables, etc. The features in this module are described together for easier reading, but are usually not implemented as a group. Status of this document This section describes the status of this document at the time of its publication.

The i, b, em, & strong elements. While many HTML4 elements have been brought into HTML5 essentially unchanged, several historically presentational ones have been given semantic meanings.

The i, b, em, & strong elements

Let’s look at <i> and <b> and compare them to the semantic stalwarts <em> and <strong>. In summary: <i> — was italic, now for text in an “alternate voice”, such as transliterated foreign words, technical terms, and typographically italicized text (W3C:Markup, WHATWG)<b> — was bold, now for “stylistically offset” text, such as keywords and typographically emboldened text (W3C:Markup, WHATWG)<em> — was emphasis, now for stress emphasis, i.e., something you’d pronounce differently (W3C:Markup, WHATWG)<strong> — was for stronger emphasis, now for strong importance, basically the same thing (stronger emphasis or importance is now indicated by nesting) (W3C:Markup, WHATWG) Giving presentational elements new semantic meanings.

CSS: tips & tricks. Gamification. Categorization[edit] Gamification in a narrow sense is used in a non-game context, is built into the service system, and is aiming at an infinite experience.

Gamification

It does not aim at creating a game but offering a gameful experience. In a broader sense gamification also includes game context such as in serious games and finite and infinite games.[20] Another categorization compares gamification with other gameful approaches by looking at characteristics such as spontaneity, rules, or goals:[20] Techniques[edit] Serious game. A serious game or applied game is a game designed for a primary purpose other than pure entertainment.

Serious game

The "serious" adjective is generally prepended to refer to products used by industries like defense, education, scientific exploration, health care, emergency management, city planning, engineering, and politics. [citation needed] Definition and scope[edit] Serious games are simulations of real-world events or processes designed for the purpose of solving a problem. Group dynamics. Group dynamics is a system of behaviors and psychological processes occurring within a social group (intragroup dynamics), or between social groups (intergroup dynamics).

Group dynamics

The study of group dynamics can be useful in understanding decision-making behavior, tracking the spread of diseases in society, creating effective therapy techniques, and following the emergence and popularity of new ideas and technologies.[1] Group dynamics are at the core of understanding racism, sexism, and other forms of social prejudice and discrimination. Division of labour. The division of labour is the specialization of cooperating individuals who perform specific tasks and roles.

Division of labour

Because of the large amount of labour saved by giving workers specialized tasks in Industrial Revolution-era factories, some classical economists as well as some mechanical engineers such as Charles Babbage were proponents of division of labour. Also, having workers perform single or limited tasks eliminated the long training period required to train craftsmen, who were replaced with lesser paid but more productive unskilled workers.[1] Historically, an increasingly complex division of labour is associated with the growth of total output and trade, the rise of capitalism, and of the complexity of industrialised processes.

The concept and implementation of division of labour has been observed in ancient Sumerian (Mesopotamian) culture, where assignment of jobs in some cities coincided with an increase in trade and economic interdependence. Jonathan Ashley-SmithHead of Conservation More than meets the eye The material written for the 'more than meets the eye' visitor trail at the V&A and the promotional literature for the 'creating SPARKS' festival, of which it is a part, speak of science and art as two separate entities that need to meet occasionally but which cannot be completely and permanently integrated.

Science and Art: Separated by a Common Language?

It is often claimed that conservation is a place where this fusion has actually taken place. So it might be reasonable to study the ways that conservators talk to see if they use a common language that could be applied elsewhere to assist with communication between different cultures. Art and Science Separated: the Creation Myth In the beginning science and art were one. But following the death of Prince Albert in 1861 something disruptive happened.
