Chinese-American paralympian Scout Bassett returns to China. "I am representing the US when I compete on the international level, but I am very proud to have been born Chinese," American Paralympian Scout Bassett said during a recent trip to Shanghai. She was taken to an orphanage, where she was later adopted by an American couple from Michigan, the US.

She moved to the US with them in 1995. Bassett took up sports as a way to connect with her American peers. "I have always wanted to be involved in sports and to be an athlete, but as a child I found out that it was very challenging to be an athlete with a disability, mostly because it was hard for people to be inclusive of me," she said.

Bassett spent her childhood sitting on the sidelines, being told that she didn't have a place in American sports. Today, Bassett is a young woman bursting with self-confidence, capable of literally running toward any dream she has. Pushing herself. 'Blade Runner' triumphs over adversity in sports - SHINE. They’re spending the weekends performing on the 22-city U.S. Stars on Ice (SOI) tour, and during the week they’re traveling from coast to coast for off-ice projects, attending Oscar parties in LA, media appearances in New York City, and meetings at YouTube headquarters in San Francisco.

It’s safe to say they haven’t had much time to relax since claiming an individual and team bronze medal at the 2018 Olympics in South Korea in February, but the ice dancers are savoring every moment. “Regardless of your level of experience, at the Olympic Games, it’s one of those ‘everything comes down to this’ type of moments, and I think we would have been naïve to not have the perspective of what an Olympic medal means. We’re very accomplished and experienced when it comes to our international track record, and it has all been built towards getting those Olympic medals. Also See: Where to Study Sports Diplomacy At the start of the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea, it was not sporting prowess, but sports diplomacy, that stole the show. North Korean ruler Kim Jong-un’s sister, Kim Yo-jong, became the first member of the family dynasty that rules the northern half of the Korean Peninsula to visit the southern half since the Korean War ended with a truce in 1953. Kim more or less stole the limelight from athletes in the early events — who remembers which country won men’s or women’s ski jumping, or that a Russian athlete won a medal, even though Russia wasn’t officially at the games? Dubbed “North Korea’s Ivanka,” she appeared in pictures with South Korean President Moon Jae-in and invited him to the North, and completely blanked U.S. Vice President Mike Pence. “I don’t think it means anything diplomatically. “Will taekwondo achieve what diplomacy hasn’t?”

And that is why it’s generally better to do these sorts of negotiations before you have a summit. I participated for three years as part of the U.S. negotiating team that got the last denuclear agreements with North Korea. And what you want, as Frank said, are for grunts like me and Frank to roll up our sleeves and do these negotiations for a long period of time with a summit promise at the end as sort of the action-forcing event that will take this over the goal line.

We’re doing it very differently this time, when President Trump agreed, surprising everybody, agreed that he would meet with Kim Jong-un before there really has been any substantive pre-negotiation or negotiation taking place. And so one is hopeful that that’s what will happen in the Trump-Kim summit, but, of course, we can’t be sure.

Trump rebrands diplomatic norms as events in Asia, Europe and elsewhere spin on his axis. NK leader Kim revs up high-stakes diplomacy. With a "nuclear button" and unchallenged authority at home, North Korean leader Kim Jong-un is now looking beyond his borders, forging ahead with a diplomatic adventure that could turn his country from an introvert into a player of geostrategic significance, experts said Thursday. Friday's summit between Kim and South Korean President Moon Jae-in will be the centerpiece of a flurry of diplomatic outreach apparently aimed at easing global sanctions, shoring up his country's debilitated economy and further cementing his grip on power.

The summit, along with Kim's planned encounter with US President Donald Trump in May or June, will also be a touchstone that will shed light on how willing Kim is to take steps towards denuclearization and lasting peace on the peninsula, the twin goals that have bedeviled Seoul and Washington for decades.
