The Influence of Shakespeare

It is harder to imagine a more universal writer than William Shakespeare. Rarely if ever is one of his many plays not being performed somewhere in the world and similarly rare is the tertiary English student who has not examined his work at length. His plays, sonnets and poems are common fodder for high school English departments across the globe. Shakespeare has perhaps contributed the most to the English language of any writer known to man – literally. Over 1000 words and phrases that he coined as part of his plays and prose are now in common use across the globe. Shakespeare’s influence continues even in the world of film, not invented until several hundreds of years after his death in 1616. Shakespeare remains a theatre favourite with hundreds of companies all over the world putting on performances of his most popular plays and few of the lesser-known ones as well.

There is great conjecture about Shakespeare's childhood years, especially regarding his education.

The next documented event in Shakespeare's life is his marriage to Anne Hathaway on November 28, 1582. For the seven years following the birth of his twins, William Shakespeare disappears from all records, finally turning up again in London some time in 1592. Shakespeare's Globe Theater - Introduction, History, and Images

History Although Shakespeare's plays were performed at other venues during the playwright's career, the Globe Theatre in the Southwark district of London was the venue at which the Bard's best known stage works (including his four great tragedies) were first produced. The Globe was built during Shakespeare's early period in 1599 by one of his long-standing associates, Cuthbert Burbage, the brother of the most famous Shakespearean actor of the Elizabethan Age, Richard Burbage.

In 1597, Cuthbert Burbage inherited another London theater that was the first of its kind and simply called the Theatre. But there was a problem with this valuable legacy: Cuthbert Burbage owned the Theatre, its structure and materials, but the land on which the Theatre was erected was leased by his father and his eldest son was unable to negotiate a renewal of the land lease. William Shakespeare. William Shakespeare Biography. Who Was William Shakespeare? William Shakespeare (baptized on April 26, 1564 to April 23, 1616) was an English playwright, actor and poet and is often called England’s national poet. Born in Stratford-upon-Avon, England, he was an important member of the Lord Chamberlain’s Men company of theatrical players from roughly 1594 onward. Written records give little indication of the way in which Shakespeare’s professional life molded his artistry. All that can be deduced is that, in his 20 years as a playwright, Shakespeare wrote plays that capture the complete range of human emotion and conflict.

In 1596, a Dutch student by the name of Johannes de Witt attended a play in London at the Swan Theatre. While there, de Witt made a drawing of the theatre's interior. A friend, Arend van Buchell, copied this drawing—van Buchell's copy is the sketch rendered here—and in doing so contributed greatly to posterity. Shakespeare's company erected the storied Globe Theatre circa 1599 in London's Bankside district. The story of the original Globe's construction might be worthy of a Shakespearean play of its own. Unfortunately, their aristocratic neighbors complained to the Privy Council about the plans for Blackfriars. In late December of 1598, Allen left London for the countryside. The endeavor was not without controversy. Globe Links Cambridge History of English and American Literature—William Shakespeare From the Bartleby.com website.
