Posteriormente, llamó a todos sus proyectos con variaciones del nombre, como el Merzbau. De todas las contribuciones artísticas de Schwitters realizados en el mundo, el Merzbau es, sin duda su mayor obra. A partir de 1923, Schwitters comenzó a convertir las habitaciones en su casa en Hannover, Alemania, en obras de arte arquitectónicas. A medida que el proyecto se amplió a las salas , comenzó a tomar influencia del cubismo. Duró toda la vida del artista y la mantuvo viva y en constante evolución hasta el 1936 en que tuvo que huir de Alemania. La Merzbau de Hannover, fue una obra inspirada en el movimiento Dadaista, entre la arquitectura , la escultura, la pintura y el collage que consistió en la total alteración, añadiendo volúmenes geométricos realizados con todo tipo de materiales y objetos de toda condición, del interior de la casa del artista a lo largo de su vida.
