Encyclopedia of Myths. Monstropedia. God. God. Battleground God Can your beliefs about religion make it across our intellectual battleground? In this activity, you’ll be asked a series of questions about God and religion. In each case (apart from Question 1, where "Don't Know" is a possible answer), you need to answer either True or False. The aim of the activity is not to judge whether your answers are correct. More about hits and bullets. Of course, you may go along with thinkers such as Kierkegaard and believe that religious belief does not need to be rationally consistent. The Brain's God Spot. Scientists searching for the neural "God spot", which is supposed to control religious belief, believe that there is not just one but several areas of the brain that form the biological foundations of religious belief.

The researchers said their findings support the idea that the brain has evolved to be sensitive to any form of belief that improves the chances of survival, which could explain why a belief in God and the supernatural became so widespread in human evolutionary history. "Religious belief and behaviour are a hallmark of human life, with no accepted animal equivalent, and found in all cultures," said Professor Jordan Grafman, from the US National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke in Bethesda, near Washington. Scientists are divided on whether religious belief has a biological basis. "There is nothing unique about religious belief in these brain structures. The search for the God spot has in the past led scientists to many different regions of the brain. The Myth of Persephone - Greek Goddess of the Underworld. By Laura Strong, PhD One of the best known characters in the Slavic genre of folklore and fairytales is the deadly guardian of the Underworld, Baba Yaga.

Usually found in the deepest darkest corner of the forest, she is commonly portrayed as a hideous old hag with razor sharp teeth who cannibalistically devours those who naively stumble upon her domain. She dwells in a magical hut that is surrounded by a fence made from the leftover bleached-white bones of her victims, which is illuminated by their glowing skulls. This fence is a clear signal to anyone who would dare to pass through its gate that they must be prepared for an initiatory underworld experience, an experience that could end in sudden death or life-altering enlightenment, depending upon the wits and attitude of the initiate. Throughout the Slavic region, the term baba connotes an "old woman," which when combined with the Russian term yaga, for "hag," equals the name of this well-respected elder. Works Cited Bly, Robert. The Narcissus and the Pomegranate: A New Look at Demeter and Persephone by Dawn Work-MaKinne In the years before I turned, both personally and in scholarship, toward the Germanic path, Persephone was the goddess to whom I was closest. It was from Persephone that I learned about the holiness of the work of the Underworld, of the place under the earth where what is dead awaits rebirth. I treasured Charlene Spretnak's retelling of the classical Greek myths, where Persephone was not raped into the Underworld, but undertook the journey willingly, to serve the souls who were waiting there in confusion and grief.

I didn't relate much to Persephone as Kore, the maiden goddess of springtime, the daughter for whom Demeter grieved. I never gave much thought to her partnership with Hades. So I was especially interested in the publication of Ann Suter's The Narcissus and the Pomegranate: An Archeology of the Homeric Hymn to Demeter. Well, what of thealogy and the contemporary goddess movement? Io9 - 14 terrifying Japanese monsters myths & spirits. Inuit Mythology Project on the Behance Network. Religion and Sexual Ethics. Personal Mythology. The Five Stages of Personal Myth-Making The natural five-stage sequence around which the tasks and activities of the personal mythology model are organized can be easily summarized: 1. A prevailing guiding myth (thesis) becomes outdated or otherwise dysfunctional. 2. The psyche generates alternative myths: one of these gathers critical mass as a “counter-myth” (antithesis), and it begins to challenge the prevailing myth. 3. The two engage in a dialectic, a deep struggle between thesis and antithesis, largely outside the person’s awareness, but impacting (and often creating havoc within) that person’s perceptions, feelings, thoughts, and behavior. 4. 5. At any point in your life, any of your guiding myths may be going through any of these stages of mythic transformation.

The site is evolving into an illustrated hypertext encyclopedia of Tolkien's realms and peoples. It already contains about four thousand entries, and we're constantly adding new entries and expanding existing ones.

Inside the encyclopedia The Encyclopedia of Arda contains thousands of articles covering topics from J.R.R. You'll also find a selection of interactive tools, including a chronicle to help you explore Tolkien's fictional history, and calendar to translate dates and events, a lexicon of names, a glossary of old and rare words, and much more. Context and approach The content of the Encyclopedia is written in the same context as Tolkien himself used; he presented himself simply as a translator, rather than originator of the tales.

The mythologies of the indigenous peoples of North America comprise many bodies of traditional narratives associated with religion from a mythographical perspective. Indigenous North American belief systems include many sacred narratives. Such spiritual stories are deeply based in Nature and are rich with the symbolism of seasons, weather, plants, animals, earth, water, sky and fire. The principle of an all embracing, universal and omniscient Great Spirit, a connection to the Earth, diverse creation narratives and collective memories of ancient ancestors are common.

Ten Types of Goblins. The term “goblin” can apply to many types of magical creatures around the world.

However, the one unifying feature is a sense of evil, or at least mischievousness, embodied in a grotesque or off-putting form with a general link to nighttime or merely dark places. Goblins have been around for a very long time to the point of having a specific term for them in Medieval Latin. The English word “goblin” actually comes from the Greek “kobalos” which means rogue. Many sub-races of goblins roam the globe from northern Europe to the Mediterranean area and even Japan to make sure humans know of their presence. Supernatural abilities can vary from nation to nation or continent to continent though. 10. Hobgoblins, with their dark colored shaggy hair, are thought to be one of the most benign forms of goblin, closely related to brownies. 9. Many people like to think of the Kol’ksu as mermaids with attitude problems since their lovely delicate features can make them seem kindly. 8. 7. 6.Trow 5. 4.

Five Monsters Rooted in Religion. We’ve all had one of those nights—our really sweet babysitter told an awful bloodcurdling story, or we didn’t cover our eyes during the scary part of that movie when mom told us to, and all of a sudden it’s the middle of the night and you’re gripping your sheets over your head and sweating buckets, or running full speed down the hall to your parents room.

However, most of us have been lucky enough to not have been subjected to this terror in church…or have we? Here’s a list of five monstrous creatures that actually come from religious texts and beliefs. Golem This mythical Jewish monster actually, initially, fights for the good guys. Dahag In Zoroastrian literature, Dahag, also known as Azi Dahaka, is one of the Azi (serpents, or dragons) that hold a reign of terror over the world.
