I saved the best for last. My students requested this game more often than any other game we ever played. It's based on the old drinking game "Ring of Fire," modified for the classroom. Materials needed:A standard deck of playing cards, a whiteboard, 20-30 small slips of blank paper, and a bowl. The setup:Almost none! Place the bowl in the center of a table and spread the cards out, face down, in a circle around the bowl.

I have been trying to get ready to take on the new Common Core standards. The math series we use now doesn't align to the new standards, even though they pretend they do. The maker of our series sent us a little packet on how to align to common core, but after looking through it I think they're full of it. That might not be nice, so maybe I can say they are stretching it a bit. I haven't decided how much I'm going to use of the curriculum, but I think I'm going to try to use quite a bit this year while supplementing with other things, and then next year weaning myself from it even further.

Counting on Fingers (Number Sense Activity)
I love this math activity. It’s genius on so many levels! This would help students with addition and subtraction, but also to teach “the 9’s trick” with multiplication! It would be a great introductory/review activity at the beginning of the year, especially to have each student trace their own hands and make one of these themselves.
