Hero of Alexandria Hero of Alexandria (Greek: Ἥρων ὁ Ἀλεξανδρεύς, Heron ho Alexandreus; also known as Heron of Alexandria c. 10 – c. 70 AD) was a Greek mathematician and engineer who was active in his native city of Alexandria, Roman Egypt. He is considered the greatest experimenter of antiquity[1] and his work is representative of the Hellenistic scientific tradition.[2] Hero published a well recognized description of a steam-powered device called an aeolipile (sometimes called a "Hero engine"). Much of Hero's original writings and designs have been lost, but some of his works were preserved in Arabic manuscripts. Career[edit] It is almost certain that Hero taught at the Musaeum which included the famous Library of Alexandria, because most of his writings appear as lecture notes for courses in mathematics, mechanics, physics, and pneumatics. Inventions[edit] Mathematics[edit] In media[edit] Bibliography[edit] Works known to have been written by Hero: Works that are preserved only in fragments: GeodesiaGeoponica

Flickriver - A new way to view Flickr photos and more... The Photojojo Store! - the Most Awesome Photo Gifts and Gear for Photographers Andy Astburys' Photography Blog -Andy Astburys' Photography Blog I had promised myself I was going to do a video review of my latest purchase – the Lee SW150Mk2 system and Big and Little Stopper filters I’ve just spent a Kings ransom on for my Nikon 14-24mm and D800E: PURE SEX – and I’ve bloody well paid for this! My new Lee SW150 MkII filter system for the Nikon 14-24. Just look at those flashy red anodised parts – bound to make me a better photographer! But I think that’ll have to wait while I address a question that keeps cropping up lately. Well, that’s the tricky bit because it comes in many guises. Monitor brightness is as critical as monitor colour when it comes to calibration. White Point: D65 – that figure takes care of colour. Gamma: 2.2 – that value covers monitor contrast. Luminance: 120 cdm2 (candelas per square meter) – that takes care of brightness. Simple in’it….?! And one of those ‘omissions on my part’ has been to do with monitor brightness settings COMBINED with working lighting levels in ‘the digital darkroom’.

Unix / Linux Fork Bomb Explained (Discalimer: if you run this command and something goes wrong with your computer's hardware, software or if you lose your work or data, please do not hold me responsible. You have been warned) In case you are a Windows user, we have an article about: Windows Fork Bombs! What is a Fork Bomb Unlike what its pronunciation might suggest, a fork bomb does not throw dining forks at you when it explodes. A fork bomb is something which calls the fork function indefinitely and rapidly, thus exhausting all system resources. How does a fork bomb work? In this case ‘:’ is the name of the bash function (and is interpreted by the shell itself). When a user runs the fork bomb, it defines a function named ‘:’. The definition of the function contains the root of bomb. To launch the bomb, all you need to do is to type (or copy-paste) those seemingly harmless letters in your Linux terminal and hit enter.
