Finding ourselves owning a run-down circa 1917 craftsman-style house in the metropolis of Pasadena (the 7th largest city in Los Angeles County) and just 15 minutes from downtown Los Angeles with the intersection of 134 and 210 freeways 30 yards from our home, we shelved our dreams of idyllic country living and "five acres and independence" and decided to do what we could, with what we had -- RIGHT NOW. No one thought it was possible. Residents in our low income, mixed race neighborhood thought we were the "crazy white folks." We forged ahead, calling our project the Urban Homestead® model and with no small means of blood, sweat and tears, we worked to transform this ordinary 66' x 132' urban lot [LINK: Comparison Diagram of Property ] into a self-sufficient city homestead with an organic garden that now supplies us with food year-round.

To solve this issue, London-based designer Pia Wustenberg has created a DIY kit that brings a private patch of greenery into your home. Called ‘The Garden Rug’, the indoor lawn can be watered, raised, and enjoyed in your own living room! The carpet, made from a felt-like organic material, fosters the germination of mossy green plants inside.

Similar in vein, De Groene Kathedraal (translated as the Green Cathedral) is an organic copy of the famed Notre Dame, and is very much in the spirit of the great naturalist. By accident, A Daily Dose of Architecture came across the living building on Google Maps, and found that this Dutch cathedral had been grown rather than built in southern Flevoland, Netherlands. Planted by artist Marinus Boezem in 1987, the cathedral consists of 178 Lombardy poplar trees that form the walls of the cathedral, with pathways mirroring the arches of the Cathedral of Notre-Dame, Reims, France. The poplars grew to approximately 30 meters in height, the same as the Reims Cathedral, and are placed where the columns and buttresses of the original building sit.
