To be surrounded by endless glorious volumes, to enter every morning into this multicolored world of words and pictures was truly a pleasure. I loved rearranging shelves (endlessly), lining up the books this way and that. One of my favorite things, though, was ordering books for the store (it almost completely fulfilled my shopping urges, mind you, I would always overdo it with the order :), and then anticipating eagerly their arrival. Books on photography, design, fashion, art... it would take me hours and hours to find their right spot in the bookstore, to display them properly, to sneak careful peeks through the pages.

Comics masters Not very long ago, a dedicated comics library might have looked less like a rare books room and more like a semi-coherent junk store, containing a three-dimensional scrapbook of out-of-print books, half-completed reprint series, miscellaneous small press magazines, bound photocopies and endless clippings. But the rise of the graphic novel category over the past decade has yielded a rich vein of previously rare or inaccessible archival material in well-designed, library-ready formats: complete comic strip collections, surveys of mid-century comic book genres, art books dedicated to historical and contemporary artists, and other rare pleasures. Today, a dedicated reader could fill several bookshelves with volumes compiled from this thoroughgoing history of comics, and a more casual reader or researcher can easily find the same at a well-stocked library.

Book-A-Minute Classics Got another book report to do? English teachers have the inconsiderate habit of assigning mammoth-sized works of literature to read and then actually expecting you to do it. This wouldn't be so bad except that invariably the requisite reading is as boring as fly fishing in an empty lake. Half of those books don't even have discernible plots. And let's face it -- the Cliff's Notes are pretty time-consuming too.
