Education is even more critical today, in the face of economic, environmental, and social challenges. Today's children can meet future challenges if their schooling and informal learning activities prepare them for adult roles as citizens, employees, managers, parents, volunteers, and entrepreneurs. To achieve their full potential as adults, young people need to develop a range of skills and knowledge that facilitate mastery and application of English, mathematics, and other school subjects. At the same time, business and political leaders are increasingly asking schools to develop skills such as problem solving, critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and self-management - often referred to as "21st century skills."
Science Matters And good science literally starts in your child’s elementary classroom. The pipeline for our next generation of scientists, engineers, and technicians begins in the K–6 classroom. Quality elementary science lessons capture children’s attention when they are most open, most curious, and most naturally disposed to asking questions about the world around them. Young children who receive a strong foundation in science during their elementary school years do better in science in later grades. Many students also make fundamental career decisions by the time they get to middle school, so engaging students in science at an early age provides them with more career opportunities in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) careers. The University of Arizona - Institute for Mathematics & Education The Common Core State Standards in mathematics were built on progressions: narrative documents describing the progression of a topic across a number of grade levels, informed both by research on children's cognitive development and by the logical structure of mathematics. These documents were spliced together and then sliced into grade level standards. From that point on the work focused on refining and revising the grade level standards. The Hunt Institute and CCSSO Release Common Core Implementation Video Series Common Core Implementation Video Series To further aid states as they continue to implement the Common Core State Standards (Standards), the Hunt Institute and the Council of Chief State School Officers have commissioned a series of video vignettes that explain the Standards in far greater depth. Several of the key Standards writers were asked, in their own words, to talk about how the Standards were developedand the goals they set for all students. These videos were developed to help diverse groups – educators, policymakers, parents – better understand the breadth and depth of the Standards and how they will improve teaching, make classrooms better, create shared expectations, and cultivate lifelong learning for all students. The segments are organized into separate Mathematics and ELA sections, and demonstrate critical concepts related to each.

Common Core State Standards Initiative (select any of the links below) The Common Core State Standards (CCSSI) is a joint effort led by the National Governors Association Center for Best Practices and the Council of Chief State School Officers to develop a common core of K-12 standards in English language arts and Mathematics. The goal initiative is to develop internationally-benchmarked standards that ensure all students are held to consistent expectations that will prepare them for college and career.
Common Core & Ohio Revised Standards Templates The Allen County ESC has devised templates for educators to use to map out the English Language Arts and Mathematics Common Core State Standards (CCSS) and Science and Social Studies Ohio revised Learning Standards. These templates list all of the strands, standard/content statements, topics, themes, domains, and clusters based on the 2010 CCSS and Ohio Learning Standards. Teachers have found these templates to be useful for creating pacing guides and/or curriculum maps. Maps are formatted in Excel to make it easy to manipulate columns. Curriculum maps are free of charge to member districts of the Allen County Educational Service Center. Non-members: $10.00 per curriculum map or $450.00 for a complete set.
