Educated as a stage designer, she has spent most of the last ten years actively working at the local theater group, no99, which she heads together with with her life partner, the director Tiit Ojasoo (1977); their performances have been acclaimed by both local and international audiences. Semper currently has a solo show (since 14 October) at the KUMU art museum in Tallinn. This is quite an event for appreciators of Baltic art, considering that the artist hasn't had a solo showing since the already-distant 2006. The exhibition at KUMU will last until 21 December and demonstrates that the museum's expansive fifth floor can be changed beyond recognition.

After meeting with Ene-Liis Semper, two things become clear. From the video “Oasis”. 1999 You work in the theater as an artistic director, as well as pursue a career in contemporary art. Yes and no. Semper’s work refutes recent strategies employed in video and film work, which attempt to show reality directly as a series of unmediated images. Semper possesses a definite aesthetic position that serves as an oasis to borrow a metaphor from the title of one of her works an unexpected visual spectacle in the context of the contemporary desert of images. Ene-Liis Semper points the camera at the intimacies of her personal life, observing subtleties of psychological and bodily experiences. Nevertheless, the final sequence of images is far removed from recent artistic strategies which show reality directly as an unmediated image, as if seen through surveillance or web cameras. Ene-Liis Semper likes to cast herself in the leading role. “Usually, I do not make stories about my real life,” the artist says. Especially at a time when Semper, having until now concurrently worked as a video artist, as well as a performance and theatre artist, seems to have more opportunities and desire than ever before to unite those different extremes (1). But perhaps there is good reason to examine some of the strategies through which Semper’s work, especially her videos, have gained a rather uncommon position in Estonian art in a relatively short period, and even attracted international attention.

In the Estonian context, this means almost unanimous acknowledgement, drawing together audiences from rather different backgrounds. The international attention indicates a comprehension, or at least an appeal, that does not require much knowledge of the context. Undoubtedly, there is a certain universal quality to Semper’s works. Semper’s works nearly always contain some kind of two-sidedness, an ambiguity.
