Freifunk (German for Free Radio) is an initiative to support the development of tools for free mesh networks. Besides that the initiative supports communities developing know-how to set up their own networks. The freifunk community is is part of a network of projects developing tools for mesh networks including the Freifunk Firmware and OpenWrt projects, routing protocols such as OLSR and B.A.T.M.A.N., tools like Maps for networks (e.g. freimap), scanning tools like the horst tool and many more. http://wiki.freifunk.net/Kategorie:English
http://smesh.org/ SMesh IS seamless wireless mesh network being developed by the Distributed System and Networks Lab at Johns Hopkins University . It provides peer-to-peer connectivity, Internet connectivity, and fast handoff to mobile clients across the mesh. Clients get connected automatically through standard DHCP.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Netsukuku Netsukuku is the name of an experimental peer-to-peer routing system, developed by the FreakNet MediaLab (Italian) in 2006, created to build up a distributed network, anonymous and censorship-free, fully independent but not necessarily separated from the Internet , without the support of any server , ISP and no central authority. It does not rely on a backbone router, or on any routing equipment other than normal network interface cards. [ edit ] Basic idea Netsukuku aims to build a fully distributed network that does not rely on single points of failure as the actual Internet.

OpenWrt

Instead of trying to create a single, static firmware, OpenWrt provides a fully writable filesystem with package management. This frees you from the application selection and configuration provided by the vendor and allows you to customize the device through the use of packages to suit any application. For developer, OpenWrt is the framework to build an application without having to build a complete firmware around it; for users this means the ability for full customization, to use the device in ways never envisioned. https://openwrt.org/
http://thelifenetwork.org/about.html Introduction In the wake of major disasters, the failure of existing communications infrastructure and the subsequent lack of an effective communication solution results in increased risk, inefficiencies, damage and casualties. Current options such as satellite communication are expensive and have limited functionality. A robust communication solution should be affordable, easy-to-deploy, require low-to-zero infrastructure, consume little power and facilitate Internet access. LifeNet is a WiFi-based data communication solution designed for post-disaster scenarios.

Project Kleinrock - OmegaSDG Project Wiki

http://wiki.omegasdg.com/index.php?title=Project_Kleinrock From OmegaSDG Project Wiki Following are the details of a project to create a completely autonomous "second layer" of the Internet, completely free of the influence of or need for Internet Service Providers, and untouchable by the government. This plan is named after Leonard Kleinrock, inventor of the Internet Packet.
For those interested in alternative internet infrastructures, I’ve been assembling a list of projects and initiatives working to build mesh network solutions, as well as communities and resources around this topic. I’ve also posted this on Quora . Please feel free to add any projects I’ve missed. We’re hoping to understand the landscape of this initiative and how these projects & communities can better coordinate their efforts, in preparation for the Contact Conference in NYC this October 20, 2011. - Digitata.org - develop an inexpensive infrastructure (low bandwidth internet terminals) for basic internet exposure to children in African countries - Netsukuku – an ad-hoc netowork that uses only WiFi connectivity and a specifically-built adddress system that allows direct communications between machines without resorting to the HTTP protocol

DIY Mesh Guide - WirelessAfrica

Reliable, affordable and easy access to telecommunication services for all has been identified as key to social and economic development in Africa. Self-provisioning and community ownership of low cost, distributed infrastructure is becoming a viable alternative to increase the penetration of telecommunication services in rural Africa. The recent emergence of wireless mesh network technology (based on IEEE 802.11 a/b/g standards) can help to improve the delivery of telecommunication services in these regions. The guide tries to simplfy the planning and building of a mesh network, using a step-by-step approach to setting up a infrastructure mesh node, or an access point using a Linksys WRT54gl and the Freifunk firmware or DD WRT firmware depending on the node type. David Johnson - aka "kingdavid" is a research leader in the Wireless Africa group at the Meraka Institute.

Mesh Network Hardware Giveaway

Sagrad, Inc. announces a free hardware giveaway in support of mesh network research. By eliminating one of the largest costs in testing mesh network performance, Sagrad, Inc. seeks to accelerate development of complex mesh system designs.
Open Source software might not be as visible in the telecom world, but its impact is slowly but surely being felt . A series of projects are tackling complicated products such as high-end switches, while others are cooking up DNS, Firewall and VPN gear. In fact start-ups such as Vyatta and Digium have based their entire business model on open source software. Add another name to the movement investing in open platforms. Meraki Networks , a Mountain View, Calif.-based startup is building a business off of hardware and software based on MIT’s Roofnet project .

I think we need to start a team on the WIFI Cellphone radiation / Waves problems and healthe matters... I called it electrosmog -> http://pear.ly/U2Fr ALL WELCOME \o/ by p45c4l Jul 4

it's a question I am asking, my experience of lobbying shows a taste from the market to adapt their environment, and not the other way around. No conspiracy theory, just a question ^^ by p45c4l Jul 3

Sorry, coincidence with what? Do you mean this announcement (that wifi may be dangerous) could have something to do with the rise of mesh networking? by tchoi Jul 3
