EFL func. Welcome to Systemic Functional Linguistics. The ACCELA Alliance is a professional development partnership between the University of Massachusetts Amherst, local urban school districts, and several community organizations in Western Massachusetts.
Members of the ACCELA Alliance are committed to providing data-driven, locally-responsive, and sustained professional development to educators working to support the academic literacy development of linguistically and culturally diverse learners in this region. As part of this effort, the ACCELA Alliance offers two graduate-level professional development programs: one in ESL education, and another in reading. Upon successful completion of either program, teachers can earn a Masters degree or Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study (CAGS) and apply for an ESL and/or Reading Specialist license.
All classes are currently taught in Springfield or Holyoke by professors from the UMass College of Education.

In contrast with the structural approaches to language description, systemics places the functions of language as primary, as a "fundamental property of language itself" (Halliday & Hasan 1985: 17), seeking to understand what it is that language does and how it accomplishes it. More generally, systemics looks at how language acts upon and is constrained by the social context in which it functions.

Functional Grammar Contents. Systemic functional grammar. Systemic functional grammar (SFG) is a form of grammatical description originated by Michael Halliday.[1] It is part of a social semiotic approach to language called systemic functional linguistics.
In these two terms, systemic refers to the view of language as "a network of systems, or interrelated sets of options for making meaning";[2] functional refers to Halliday's view that language is as it is because of what it has evolved to do (see Metafunction). Thus, what he refers to as the multidimensional architecture of language "reflects the multidimensional nature of human experience and interpersonal relations.
