They are protesting against the Warwick Vice-Chancellor’s pay increase of £42,000 as part of a deeper opposition to the continuing marketisation and privatisation of higher education. At a time when students are facing increasingly high graduate debts and financial uncertainty and university staff are experiencing a real wage pay cut, Protect the Public University – Warwick feels immediate action must take place to ensure these radical changes are contested. For example, current students receiving a full maintenance loan along with their tuition loan on a three-year degree will have a post-university debt of £43,500. And now it has been reported that graduates are facing the threat of an increase in their interest payments: This action takes place at a time of resurgence in student activism.

The building’s Council Chamber has been occupied by a group of around twenty student protesters calling themselves ‘Protect the Public University – Warwick’ since last Friday. The group published a list of seven objectives on Saturday afternoon, which includes the objective that vice-chancellor Nigel Thrift “relinquishes his unjustifiable pay increase” and uses it to fund a bursary for students from the local community. A spokesperson for the group told the Boar that morale in the room is “very high” and that they have been holding meetings three or four times a day. Gurminder K Bhambra, Professor of Sociology at Warwick, John Holmwood, Professor of Sociology at Nottingham University, and Michael Niblett, Research Fellow in the Yesu Perusad Centre for Caribbean Studies at Warwick gave talks outside Senate House to over one hundred students in support of the objectives of ‘Protect the Public University – Warwick’ (PPU), the group of around twenty students occupying the Senate House Council Chamber. The ‘open teach-in’ was introduced by Steven Barrell, a Phd Philosophy student, who called Nigel Thrift’s £42,000 pay rise ‘grotesque’.

A group of students, who call themselves ‘Protect the Public University – Warwick’ (PPU) set up nine tents at about 7.30am this morning. They handed out information to parents and prospective students and explained the objectives of their protest. “It’s just as radical as it was twenty-five years ago,” said a 51-year-old mother and Warwick alumna, who works as an art teacher, gesturing at Senate House. She had travelled from London as her son was hoping to study Maths at Warwick. “Education should be free for everyone,” she added. Theboar: *Senate House occupation ends. The group, which calls itself Protect the Public University, says Thrift's pay packet – which now totals £316,000 – reflects the marketisation of higher education. It says: "There is currently no space for dialogue over the future of our own university. We are occupying this council chamber in order to open that space, to start that dialogue and to make our voices heard. " THE: Students occupy Warwick council chamber. About 20 students from a group called Protect the Public University – Warwick entered the university premises on Friday for a “meeting of indefinite length”. They want to highlight the issue of student debt caused by the trebling of tuition fees last autumn and lack of progress made by Russell Group universities in recruiting students from poor families. “Universities are becoming the site of extraordinary inequalities,” said a spokesman for the group. Protestors also have a list of grievances against Warwick, including the £42,000 pay hike awarded to its vice-chancellor Nigel Thrift last year. Warwick’s academic registrar Michael Glover has refused to engage with the students and said in a letter sent to the occupiers and seen by The Independent that the occupation was having ‘a number of negative impacts on the operation of the university’. Read more: The Warwick University protest is yet another sign that students aren't going to take it any more Mr Glover demands that the group set an end date for their occupation and has labelled the indefinite extension of the occupation “totally unacceptable”. “The university has shown no interest in opening dialogue and it's resorting to intimidation,” said a spokesperson for the occupiers. Supporters wore squares of yellow cloth to show their solidarity with the occupation.

A spokesperson from ‘Protect the Public University – Warwick’ (PPU) said: “We thought it was important that this didn’t drag out to the end of term and the university didn’t resort to the disproportionate use of legal methods or disciplinary action to threaten us out.”

Around 20 students, who had occupied the university’s Senate House since last week, left the building at 4.15pm on Saturday. Security permitted them to leave without hindrance. An anonymous member of the group, who had been inside, said: “It’s so weird to be outside. I haven’t slept properly for eight days.” Inequality and the University. British politics has been strangely quiet about the topic of inequality. Courage, in two movements. Last month, I wrote asking what the ‘fearless’ university might feel like. I wanted to highlight two very different, but not unrelated, examples that came to my attention in recent days. Each speaks to a different kind of courage that I am interested in exploring in relation to one another.

“WTF is happening?!” – Warwick, the police and the new student movement. Images of pepper spray and a Taser on a university campus were shocking, but if the new student movement is to dig its heels in it can expect more where that came from. “What the fuck is happening?!” Cried a woman two metres away from me, holding one hand to her mouth while the other tried to keep her camera focused on the police. Within seconds, a generous spray of CS gas was discharged on a group who were filming with their smartphones, trying to capture some sense of the chaos. If you’ve never been CS gassed, you don’t want to be.
