Untold numbers of people changed their Facebook profile picture last week to that of an red equals sign , inspired by an effort by the Human Rights Campaign to raise awareness that the Supreme Court was hearing arguments in two cases about the constitutionality of Proposition 8 and the Defense of Marriage Act. These cases would determine the fate of gay marriage in the United States and it sparked significant online activism But now the numbers are in of how many people on Facebook were riled up and they are overwhelming.

According to Facebook , approximately 2.7 million people changed their profile picture to be a red equals sign. The highest rates of participation were in college towns, peaking in Washentaw County, Michigan, which includes the University of Michigan, where over 6% of Facebook users changed their profile pictures.
