Tyvek Innovative Uses - Material Concepts Blog

The Tyvek installation art exhibit called INSILENCE2 is being shown from May 10 to August 30, 2013. The images here are from this installation; the dimensions are 24' wide, by 10' high and a 30' extension into the gallery. Signe provides this description of her work with Tyvek: I selected Tyvek #10 paper-like material to make my INSILENCE installations.

I had used various kinds of collaged paper in an earlier installation, Room2, but felt paper was too rigid. My first version of INSILENCE, a forty by nine foot passageway constructed of three patterned fields of collaged Tyvek, was presented at Untitledartspace in Oklahoma City in the summer of 2008. For the second version at the Dahl Art Center in Rapid City, SD, I reconfigured the three collaged fields to form a new variation: INSILENCE2. Thoughts on bottle fragmentsI. Interactive work. This time, Niens has avoided any of the physical ‘obstacles’ that he used in his previous site-specific installations, such as narrow passages, heavy-weight or closed doors. For Arco madrid 2013 he has chosen to make an installation/staircase, a well-known shape, as a structure in which the visitors are invited, instead of challenged. Consumption Installation. Love it or hate? The “new” three dimensional contemporary art form as it is understood today has been around since the 1950’s when Allan Kaprow used the term “Environment” to describe his transformed indoor spaces. Essentially Installation Art asks us to use all our senses to experience its world rather than restricting us to just one or two senses. Allan Kaprow noted that “if we bypass ‘art’ and take nature itself as a model or point of departure, we may be able to devise a different kind of art…. out of the sensory stuff of ordinary life” For example in his piece ‘Words’ (1962), Allan Kaprow created an environment that included light and sounds so that the viewer became part of the work, instead of being a passive onlooker.

The viewer was encouraged to ‘play’ with the words and contributed to written and verbal components, thus creating an interactive role with the piece. Matta-Clark Hybrid. This summer artists Joakim Kaminsky and Maria Poll went deep inside the forests of Medelpad in northern Sweden to create this uncanny installation entitled Clear Cut using a mirror-coated fabric.

Matta-Clark Hybrid

However eternal it may seem this is not a natural forest. Like 90% of the forests in Sweden it is used for forestry consequently being continuously grown and chopped down in a 60 years life cycle.Joakim and Maria wanted to connect these trees to time. They wanted the installation to visualize a memory of earlier generations of pine trees that had stood here and forecast the clear cut that will soon replace them. Perhaps the mirrors could absorb the light, colors and smells of this place and save them for the future? It really looks almost as if forest has been severed in half, the treetops hovering above the bottoms. I found this on a new blog called Toildrops, which from glancing at just the home page could be a new favorite. Really lovely work. Shape. Installation Art focuses on function and aesthetics at the same time.

Everyday and natural or synthetic materials can be always inspiring to the people who are capable of exploring and discovering possibilities. Some extraordinary artists today have been realizing some of the best artwork with the materials for their evocative qualities to transform the perception of a space into a brand new environment.
