Myshowcase.me - Home. WCET. Looking for a teaching job? Here's how to avoid a dysfunctional school. In a 20-year career, I’ve jumped ship a few times.
Sometimes it’s for good reasons (a cabin upgrade), sometimes for not such good reasons (the captain’s acting like he’s been at the rum rations). However, while you can know what you’re leaving, it is almost impossible to know what you’re joining. Committing yourself to a school you don’t know much about is a big gamble and, come September, you don’t want to look down and discover that you’ve just bought a return ticket for the Titanic. Believe me, I know that feeling. On one memorable occasion, two days into a new post, I found myself around the conference table with seven senior leadership team colleagues. There is hope, however. MIT Dean Takes Leave to Start New University Without Lectures or Classrooms. Christine Ortiz is the dean for graduate education and a professor of materials science and engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
In a conversation with The Chronicle, she discusses her ideas about building a new type of college from scratch. Christine Ortiz is taking a leave from her prestigious post as a professor and dean at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology to start a radical, new nonprofit university that she says will have no majors, no lectures, and no classrooms.
Many details about the new university are still undetermined, she says, but the basic idea is to answer the question, What if you could start a university from scratch for today’s needs and with today’s technology? Her venture is not the only effort to create a new kind of college — there’s the Minerva Project, created by a tech entrepreneur in San Francisco, and MOOC providers like Udacity, started by a former Stanford University professor. Antioch University eliminates jobs of five presidents. Antioch University has eliminated the president positions and the boards of trustees of all five of its campuses.
The Board of Governors -- a fiduciary body -- will now oversee the entire Antioch system, wrote Chancellor Bill Groves in a letter to the Antioch community obtained by Inside Higher Ed. Several members of the now-defunct boards of trustees will be asked to join the Board of Governors, Groves wrote. Groves was named interim chancellor for two years in April. He succeeded Felice Nudelman, who held the post for four years and will now serve as chief global officer for innovation and partnerships.
The decisions were meant to simplify a university governance structure that had become too complex, said a university leader who agreed to provide background information without being identified or quoted directly. The boards of trustees were established in 2009 as advisory bodies, the university leader said. Jones declined to comment for this story. Tolomaps. I recently created an infographic on the cost of child care in the U.S. for my graphic design in cartography class this semester.
One of the assignment requirements was to include a bivariate map in the visual story. A bivariate map is one that shows two different pieces of data on one map. You can also have multivariate maps, showing more than two variables (my personal fave is pop vs. soda). Bivariate choropleth maps shade different units (in my case, states - but could be counties or countries) different colors based on these variables.
Bivariate choropleth maps are difficult to understand, and thus difficult to make. But, alas, that is beside the point because I am here today to tell you how I created my bivariate choropleth color scheme. Signup - Create Your Hired Account - Hired.
