Wu Chien Chuan (1870–1942) learned Tai Chi Chuan from his father Wu Chuan Yu (1834–1902), who was a student of Yang family.
At the time that Wu Chuan Yu was teaching, the art was yet known by the family names that distinguished the different styles of Tai Chi Chuan. Wu Chien Chuan became known as the founder of the Wu Family style of Tai Chi Chuan. Wu Chien Chuan started teaching publicly in 1914 at the Beijing Physical Culture Research Institute, and later at the famous Ching Wu Martial Arts School. He eventually settled in Shanghai and set up the Chien Chuan Tai Chi Chuan Association where there is still an established branch of the school. The legacy of Wu Chen Chuan has been carried on by his descendants such as Wu Kung Yi, Wu Kung Cho, Wu Ying Hua and her husband Ma Yueh Liang. Ma Yueh Liang began his studies in the Wu Family style of Tai Chi Chuan from the famous Wu Chien Chuan at the age of 18 years old, later to become one of Wu’s most senior disciples. In 1930 Ma Yueh Liang married Wu Ying Hua, who was the daughter of Wu Chien Chuan. Wu Ying Hua was also an accomplished practitioner in the Wu family tradition, learning Tai Chi from an early age from her father. Together, Ma Yueh Liang and Wu Ying Hua taught the Wu style of Tai Chi Chuan for many years, even when they became quite elderly! The teachings of the Wu Family Tai Chi Chuan as taught by Ma Yueh Liang and his Wu Ying Hua are now being transmitted by their son Ma Jiang Bo and their adopted daughter Shi Mei Lin.
