Now, for a limited time online shops like i.materialise are offering designers the chance to play with experimental materials that have properties akin to rubber. Currently these materials are only being offered on a limited basis, but they're already paving the way for new ideas, including one haute couture dress that paraded down the catwalk at Spring Fashion Week 2013 earlier this year. The new material, which is dyed black and called Rubber-like, is priced at €2 (US$2.60) per cubic centimeter, which is more expensive than other options. However, this is one of the few materials available that frees designers to incorporate shock absorption and structural elasticity into their models, gadgets, and functional objects. One of the more exciting possibilities afforded by this material is 3D printed clothing, as can be seen in the following video.

Moedls app turns your smartphone into a 3D Scanner

How to scan the object for 3D printing in a cheaper way? Moedls, Mobile 3d Laser Scanner, is an app which runs on a smartphone and can do high level 3D scanning. The iOS or Android app uses a consumer-quality laser, rotating platform and a custom enclosure to capture objects in digital form. Inventor John Fehr said the project was designed for capturing his daughter's art sculptures. In the video below you can see the sculpture being scanned with Moedls using an iPhone 3GS. This project was one of ten semi-finalists to Engadget's "Insert Coin" competition, which showcases inventors' do-it-yourself projects and eventually helps them get funding to bring their products to the market. This Moedls app is still awaiting for approval for listing in the Apple store, after that it will be launched on kickstarter.

Price, ease of use, size, and print resolution are all factors that could influence the types of objects you're able to create. If you want a printer that fits on your desk and can print objects the size of a basketball though, you may want to consider the latest model from Aleph Objects, Inc. The LulzBot TAZ 3D printer boasts an open source hardware approach in design and claims to have the largest print volume for desktop printers in its price range. View all Once assembled, the TAZ takes up a space of 680 x 520 x 515 mm (26.8 x 20.5 x 20.3 in), but it's actual printing area measures 298 x 275 x 250 mm (11.7 x 10.8 x 9.8 in).

Gigabot 3D Printer – who says good things come in small packages?

With so many options to choose from already flooding the market, re:3D decided to go big or go home, resulting in what it calls a "large format" 3D printer that can output more objects in a single batch and much larger individual pieces. View all Priced at $2,750, the Gigabot is one of the more expensive fused filament fabrication printers to enter production. Whereas most printers require that you break up large objects into smaller pieces (which then have to be assembled), the Gigabot's huge build envelope will likely save you the hassle. Artec Eva™ — Software Features — Artec 3D Scanners. Artec Studio offers 2 different ways of scanning: 1. Scanning with real-time fusion - the software compares 3D frames to find the same geometric features and to stitch these 3D frames together in real time, while you scan. 2. Texture tracker - the software analyzes textural and geometric features that are used to position the frames together, while you scan.

Fusion may be done later.
