Deconstructing Starbucks' 'Fair Trade'

This is a little coffee tale about fudging the truth with statistics. Or maybe it's that the largest specialty coffee company in the world simply made a little inadvertent mistake. You be the judge. As people learn more about the long-term crisis in coffee pricing, they are wanting to know what their favorite coffee company is paying its farmers. As a 100% Fair Trade company, our answer is easy - we pay $1.41/lb at a minimum to the farmer cooperatives for all of our coffees. Sounds good, doesn't it? Further, if you really wanted an apples to apples comparison of landed costs at this end (which is the Starbucks $1.20), by adding importing and transportation costs, our landed cost would be $1.86. Let's keep an eye on those guys and see if they'll ever come clean.

In 2004, 24,222 tonnes (24,222,000 kg) of 7,050,000 tonnes (7.05×109 kg) produced worldwide were from Fair trade farmers; in 2005, 33,991 tonnes (33,991,000 kg) out of 6,685,000 tonnes (6.685×109 kg) were from Fair trade, an increase from 0.34% to 0.51%. Howling Monkey coffee is organic and shade grown. Coffee from the BSR coop is grown in an area known as the Golden Triangle because of its rich soil. The GT is a critical area, it recharges aquifers and rivers, is known for some of Nicaragua’s richest agricultural land, and also serves as a biological channel for many tropical birds. The coffee is shaded by a large variety of shade and fruit trees. These trees provide habitat for fauna like howler monkeys. Compas de Nicaragua.

In addition to corn, beans, rice, and sorghum, Don Ramon grows coffee, fruit trees, tomatoes, peppers, avocados, and yucca. After saving part of his crops for future seeds and feeding his family, he sells as much as he can. But unfortunately, when the harvest is good, the prices he gets for his crops are low. “The money doesn’t come to the poor farmer,” Don Ramon says. According to Don Ramon, the coop supports local farmers in many ways. The BSR coop itself has also provided Don Ramon with fruit trees and shade trees.
