The hexagonal object features a crystallized surface which flickers and blinks in a multitude of colours. Each faceted angle acts in a manner similar to a giant pixel, holistically displaying an image or effect by coordinating their light patterns. the installation aims to create a visual dialogue with the viewer, at times mimicking and reflecting the actions of those in front with a ghostly but vibrantly coloured silhouette. it plays with the elements of imagination and reality by juxtaposing the act of subversive thinking with visual perception. click here to see a video of ‘new angles’ in action. ‘new angles’ viewer interacting with the installation ‘new angle’ mimics the motions of the viewer detail detail. I’ve spent countless hours building LED controllers, programming them, and incorporating them into my projects. So, naturally, I’ll jump at the opportunity to integrate LEDs into almost anything. Such an opportunity came up when Jesse and Jessica were invited to an innovation event by Nooka and were asked to bring a piece with them. We wanted our piece to be both representative of our normal work, but also a bit more dynamic and eye-catching. So we did the obvious thing: take one of our previously 3d printed pieces, and add some LEDs to it: The implementation was rather simple. The control signal was created with a Leaflabs Maple microcontroller (we used this instead of an Arduino because it has 16-bit PWM outputs rather than Arduino’s 8-bit PWM, meaning that the lights fade much more smoothly), and we programmed about a half-dozen different patterns into the box. Why all of the additional parts over the first circuit? Core77 / industrial design magazine + resource / Design Festivals category.

Although usage is unlikely to come anywhere near the 2/3-of-trips-by-bicycle mark set in the mid-80's, the 2012 launch of the city's bikeshare program and ever-increasing congestion are key factors in bringing pedal power back into fashion in the capital city... and at somewhere between 16–20% usage as of the current decade, they're easily an order of magnitude beyond, say, NYC. The iconic Flying Pigeon may be a veritable endangered species among the mix of domestically-produced bikes on streets and sidewalks throughout the city, but the bicycle commuter, as a breed, certainly is unlikely to go extinct any time soon. So too is the curbside repair shop a common sight, at least along the more heavily trafficked bicycle routes in the city center. Continued... Posted by Sam Dunne | 3 Oct 2013 | Comments (1)
