Eclipse Predictions and Earth's Rotation. Fred Espenak Introduction When Sir Isaac Newton first published his revolutionary theory of gravitation in the Principia (1687), it laid the ground work for the prediction of planetary motion throughout the solar system. Edmund Halley played a pivital role in motivating Newton to develop this mathematical description of gravity. In fact, Halley even financed much of the Principia's publication costs. Halley was quite curious about the orbits of the planets.
Using Newton's Principia, Halley calculated orbits for the comets of 1531, 1607, and 1682 and discovered that they must be successive returns of the same object. Although not as well known, Halley also made important scientific contributions in his studies of eclipses. Earth's Rotation The ocean tides are casued by the gravitational pull of the Moon and, to a lesser extent, the Sun. The Moon's average distance from Earth is increasing by 3.8 centmeters per year. Unfortunately, Earth's rotation is not slowing down at a uniform rate. Top Ten Films 1930-2011. 2019 1. LEAVING NEVERLAND (Dan Reed) 2.

6 Mind Blowing Special Effects You Won't Believe Aren't CGI. Computer generated images are like the foam sets of the present era: 20 years from now, people are going to laugh their asses off at the fact that this stuff looked even remotely real to us. That's why, as we've mentioned before, there are still filmmakers doing special effects the old-fashioned way -- even if the results are so impressive that you'd never know it's not CGI. There's CGI in Cracked's new Adventures in Jedi School mini-series, but the humor is all a practical effect. #6. Inception -- The Dream Collapsing Inception is one of those movies that could have easily gotten away with doing every single special effect in CGI, because it's full of so many insane moments that we assume half the things in it are computer generated anyway (for example, there's no evidence that Ken Watanabe is a real person).

How To Mix Chalkboard Paint in Any Color. We love using chalkboards as backdrops for displays and parties (like this one here!). So we were super excited to learn that you can create your own custom colors-and it's really easy! We first learned how from Martha Stewart whose tutorial you can read here. She recommends that you use latex paint, but we tried it out with acrylic paints with much success. Here's how you too can create your own chalkboard paint... Supplies: 1/2 cup acrylic paint (choose any color you like, or mix colors together to make the perfect shade!)
, 1 tablespoon unsanded grout (this can be purchased at most hardware/home improvement stores, we got ours at Home Depot), mixing cup or bowl, spoon, paint brush and an object or board you plan to paint on. 1. 2. The Voynich manuscript is an illustrated codex hand-written in an unknown writing system. The vellum on which it is written has been carbon-dated to the early 15th century (1404–1438), and may have been composed in Northern Italy during the Italian Renaissance.[1][2] The manuscript is named after Wilfrid Voynich, a Polish book dealer who purchased it in 1912.[3] Some of the pages are missing, but about 240 remain. The text is written from left to right, and most of the pages have illustrations or diagrams. The Voynich manuscript has been studied by many professional and amateur cryptographers, including American and British codebreakers from both World War I and World War II.[4] No one has yet succeeded in deciphering the text, and it has become a famous case in the history of cryptography.
The mystery of the meaning and origin of the manuscript has excited the popular imagination, making the manuscript the subject of novels and speculation. The Voynich manuscript was donated by Hans P. Roanoke Colony. Failed colony in North America (1584–1590) Roanoke Colony was founded by Governor Ralph Lane in 1585 on Roanoke Island in present-day Dare County, North Carolina. Poor relations with some of the local Native American tribes and a lack of supplies troubled Lane's colony.
A resupply mission by Sir Richard Grenville was delayed, so Lane abandoned the colony and returned to England with Sir Francis Drake in 1586. Grenville arrived two weeks later and also returned home, leaving behind a small detachment to protect Raleigh's claim. A second expedition led by John White landed on the island in 1587. Sir Walter Raleigh had sent him to establish the "Cittie of Raleigh" on the Chesapeake Bay. Speculation that the colonists had assimilated with nearby Indian tribes appears in writings as early as 1605.
The Outer Banks were explored in 1524 by Giovanni da Verrazzano, who mistook Pamlico Sound for the Pacific Ocean, and concluded that the barrier islands were an isthmus.
