List of idioms in the English language - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_English_language_idioms This is a list of notable idioms in the English language . An idiom is a common word or phrase with a culturally understood meaning that differs from what its composite words' denotations would suggest. For example, an English speaker would understand the phrase "kick the bucket" to mean "to die" – as well as to actually kick a bucket. Furthermore, they would understand when each meaning is being used in context. An idiom is not to be confused with other figures of speech such as a metaphor , which invokes an image by use of implicit comparisons ( e.g. , "the man of steel" ); a simile , which invokes an image by use of explicit comparisons ( e.g. , "faster than a speeding bullet" ); and hyperbole , which exaggerates an image beyond truthfulness ( e.g. , like "missed by a mile" ).

More Awe-Inspiring GIFs from Jamie Beck and Kevin Burg - My Modern Metropolis

There was a time, not too long ago, when the term "cinemagraph" was being thrown around and internet culture gravitated toward this amalgamation of still shots and modest yet aesthetically effective movement. New York-based photographer Jamie Beck and her counterpart Kevin Burg first coined the term last year, gaining a lot of recognition for their cinematic images with subtle movement. My Modern Met even had the opportunity to interview the creative forces behind the perfected animated gifs. Since then, the duo has continued to develop breathtaking gifs, often focusing on fashion, and share it on their blog From Me To You . http://www.mymodernmet.com/profiles/blogs/jamie-beck-kevin-burg-from-me-to-you

How Can I Be More Convincing and Get Anything I Want?

Dear Lifehacker, I've read about how to plant ideas in someone's head , but the whole idea of bald-faced manipulation makes me uneasy. Still, I'm not great at making a case for what I want, even though I know it's a skill that's incredibly useful. Can you offer any suggestions to help me better convince others to do what I want? Sincerely, Unconvincing Dear Unconvincing, TV shows and movies focus on characters who are impeccable at reading others, so it's not unusual to wonder if these sorts of tricks are based in reality. http://lifehacker.com/5906546/how-can-i-be-more-convincing-and-get-anything-i-want
