One outstanding characteristic of our modern technological world is the use of ‘standard modules’. For example, suppose you are asked to set up the appointment schedule and billing procedure for a law firm or a doctor’s office. What you need, of course, is a ‘database’ program.
Intellectual Ventures, a self-proclaimed invention company in Bellevue, Washington, has proposed an unconventional idea to deal with global warming in this modern age. While most environmentalists are trying to convince millions of people to change their behavior in order to stop global warming, the company Intellectual Ventures has taken a different route. The task as they saw it was to cool the Earth. The idea of convincing enough people to make behavioral changes in order to make an actual difference just seemed too unlikely to them. Instead, they have proposed an alternative way to cool the Earth. Mount Pinatubo’s eruption in 1991 caused tons of sulfur dioxide to enter the Earth’s atmosphere, causing a cloud to form above the ground.
Aurora on Jupiter Other Magnetospheres The Earth's magnetosphere is not unique. Space probes which have visited the giant planets--Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune--found that all were magnetized, even more intensely than the Earth, and all were surrounded by radiation belts. For instance, Jupiter's "planetary magnet" is about 20,000 times stronger than the Earth's, and its radiation belt is not just more extensive than the Earth's but also more intense. This post is about Saturn’s aurora. Electric Double Layers have been identified in Earth’s aurora. It’s reasonable to postulate that Saturn’s aurora has similarities to Earth’s aurora (as well as differences). So-called “magnetic reconnection” has been claimed as also being associated with Earth’s aurora, but as demonstrated by the following Electric Double Layer papers and “magnetic reconnection” papers, the physical processes occuring during the events are the same, an Electric Double Layer process, and, just as important, are consistent with a full spectrum ELECTROMAGNETIC framework. Concepts & terms that fail to address electric fields, magnetic fields, motions of “electrified particles”, electric currents, and the free electrons & ions physical configurations are inadequate analytical tools.

Whether it's a giant solar flare or a beautiful green-blue aurora, just about everything interesting in space weather happens due to a phenomenon called magnetic reconnection. Reconnection occurs when magnetic field lines cross and create a burst of energy. These bursts can be so big they're measured in megatons of TNT. Several spacecraft have already sent back tantalizing data when they happened to witness a magnetic reconnection event in Earth's magnetosphere . However, there are no spacecraft currently dedicated to the study of this phenomenon. All this will change in 2014 when NASA launches the Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) mission, a fleet of four identical spacecraft that will focus exclusively on this dynamic magnetic system that stretches from the Sun to Earth and beyond.
Oh what a lively solar system we have. We can't exactly watch from a distance, but there are great loops and waves of electromagnetism pouring out not just from the Sun but also from us and from our "uphill" neighbour Jupiter, which weave and entwine, acting as conduits for the solar wind for one thing. The recently-dubbed academic science of Solar-Earth Physics brought science minds together for the first time to examine what mystics, indigenous elders and tribal historians have carried as resonant cultural archaeology for milleniums... these "heavenly bodies" interact like bobbing, spinning energy-orbs in a lively pond.

Magnetic reconnection in Earth's magnetosphere is one of the mechanisms responsible for the aurora, and it is important to the science of controlled nuclear fusion because it is one mechanism preventing magnetic confinement of the fusion fuel.
