New and comprehensively updated edition of Finnish Lessons will appear in January 2015. The first edition that was published in November 2011 has had an unbelievable journey. It has been translated into 16 languages so far and counting. It won the 2013 Grawemeyer Award issued by the University of Louisville, KY, and took me to span in Parliaments of European Union, Scotland, England, Australia, New Zealand and Latvia. I have had a marvelous journey with it, too. The first free schools were opened in 2011. Free Schools are independent schools with state funding. Any "suitable sponsor" can apply to the Secretary of State for Education for approval to open a free school including private businesses, academy chains, parents, teachers, other schools, universities and faith groups. Private schools can also apply to convert to free school status to access state funding. Free schools do not need local authority support to open and, despite the shortage of primary places in many parts of the country, many secondary free schools have been approved to open in areas with surplus places. Free Schools Can: set their own pay and conditions for staff; employ teachers without qualified teacher status; determine their own admissions arrangements; decide upon their own curriculum; set the length of terms and school days; and operate independently of the local authority and outside the local family of schools.

The UK was last year placed 50th out of 148 countries in the World Economic Forum’s competitiveness ranking in quality of maths and science education. Ms Truss is to visit 3 schools (primary and secondary level) and teacher training institutes in Shanghai next week to get a first-hand look at maths classes and teaching methods there. It is the latest step in the government’s drive to raise standards in maths, looking at what has made jurisdictions in the far east the most successful in the world in teaching the subject, and matching that work.
