That gives you about 5 weeks or so to find the perfect gift for the person who, in addition to one million other things, may have spent her birthday in 20 hours of labor, thereby missing going out to eat for her birthday dinner at a swanky restaurant. And okay, Southern daughter, you ARE the best birthday present I ever have or will get, but there’s still that 20 hours of labor thing. And so for all of you looking (as I am sure the Southern daughter is doing Right This Minute) for the perfect unusual Mother’s Day gift, I am here to help! Continue Reading …

The Best New Way to Bring Your Lunch I’ll admit it—my workday lunches can get pretty boring. I always think I’m going to finally make use of all those delicious recipes I’ve been pinning away, but then nighttime rolls around and I’m too busy watching really important things like The Bachelorette and Vampire Diaries. And then morning comes, and I’m running around like a headless chicken and I’m lucky if I remember my keys and bus pass on the way out the door, let alone find time to throw a tasty lunch together. But with a teensy amount of planning, delicious lunches can be just a few easy steps away. Cruftbox When Intelligentsia Coffee opened in Pasadena recently, I was intrigued the lasagna cupcakes they served. The cupcakes are made by Heirloom LA, a catering business. About the size of a muffin, a single lasagna cupcake was a delicious meal. After seeing how much my daughter enjoyed them (she ate my entire cupcake and I had to order a second one), I decided I had to try making them at home. After a bit of research, here is my method. The girls love them and take them to school as lunch.

Samurai tour guide still going strong at 82 It's not every 82-year-old who can slice and dice a tossed apple with a samurai sword, charm a pack of giggling schoolgirls, and cap off each day with eight shots of whiskey. Meet Itsuo "Joe" Okada. Born in the opening decade of the Showa Era (1926-1989), Okada is a sharp-witted man with an upright posture, his topknot fluttering in the breeze. "I'm almost buried in the ground at my age," he says with a laugh. The Ultimate Sandwich Recipe: Feast your eyes on this! First things first, the CellarVie Wines team cannot lay claim to being responsible for the making of the ‘Ultimate Sandwich’. This remarkable feat of culinary engineering, complete with the beautiful pictures displayed below, arrived in our inbox courtesy of an anonymous email chain on Tuesday afternoon. Jamie Oliver would undoubtedly and perhaps quite correctly, not endorse this as a healthy meal, and it certainly isn't for the faint-hearted but we thought it was a bit of fun nonetheless. So feast your eyes on the ‘Ultimate sandwich’… Ingredients (a guideline) 1 hard crusted Italian bread

Scalloped Hasselback Potatoes “Scalloped” is an attractive word, isn’t it? When I hear it I think of several things: first, there’s scallops, as in the seafood—totally delicious. Then there’s the scalloped shape that can live on the edge of a pair of shorts or on the collar of a woman’s blouse—always pretty and dainty. And of course scalloped potatoes also comes to mind, which carries my imagination to a land of crispy potato skins drenched in a sea of cheese and cream.

Kitchen Hack: One-Minute Bread Oven-fresh bread is one of life’s simple joys. Ciabatta, a crisp-crusted Italian bread with hints of sourdough and loads of crannies longing for butter, is one of the easiest breads to make at home. Why are we talking about baking bread on Lifehack? Because kitchen hacks aren’t just impressive, they often have very tasty results! In this instance, I’m going to show you how to make ciabatta with less than one minute of prep time. How is that possible? www.menshealth.com/mhlists/gourmet-sandwiches-for-guys/printer.php/ From the molten yolk and bacon crunch of a hand-held breakfast, to the gooey charm of grilled cheese for lunch, nothing matches the simple pleasures of well-made sandwiches. They're quick to assemble, infinitely adaptable, easy to eat, and immediately satisfying—the very definition of good food. The 25 sandwiches you're about to meet can be thrown together during the average basketball halftime or, with practice, during the seventh-inning stretch. (Who needs hot dogs, anyway?)
