Grey Knit Dress » LauPre
I sewed up this little light weight knit dress last night, and I’m really happy with it! (observant eyes may notice it’s the same fabric I used for the top in my last post) It has a fun, flowy skirt with an interesting uneven hem. I was working without a pattern and freehanded some shapes to see how it would look in a skirt. The front is a modified half circle skirt shape with the edges cut to match the pieces along the back. Oh yeah, and I’m currently blonde
Make Typographic String Art » Man Made DIY | Crafts for Men « Keywords: wood, typography, diy, craft
In the late 60s and 70s, string art became a popular paint-by-numbers-y way for the masses to get crafty. Head to your local thrift store, and you'll likely find a few, in all their harvest gold glory. Usually sold in kits, these guys involved strategically placed nails or pins that were connected by string or yarn to create geometrical shapes or mathematical patterns. But, I'm not really into geometrical shapes or mathematical patterns. I'm into letters, so I decided to create some original string art with a typographic twist. It's super fun, easy-to-make, and infinitely customizable. Here's how: Materials and Tools: 1. 2. Since I knew I was going to use my overhead projector to transfer the image, I just printed the transparency, and used that to size an piece of plywood I had lying around, which I then cut to size. 3. 4. Notice I've added the dots for each nail to my pattern, and that's what I transfer to the plywood, instead of the outline of each letter. 5. 5. 6. That's it.
Silk-Dyed Eggs {aka TIE-Dyed!}
I posted this tutorial a few years ago and it has become somewhat of a tradition to bring it back every year! One of our family Easter traditions is dying eggs with pieces of silk. I saw a cute lady show Martha how to do it a few years ago and I ran upstairs right then to steal a tie! It’s way cooler than those cups of neon liquid that end up all over your clothes, your furniture and your hands plus it gives you an excuse to rid a man’s closet of ugly ties. Here’s the run-down: You need 100% silk for this to work. I try to find an assortment of colors and patterns. Usually it will tell you if it’s 100% silk right on the main label of the tie, but a lot of them don’t, and if that’s the case, check that little tiny end, it’s usually hiding there. The first step is to deconstruct the tie. Next you cut a piece large enough to cover an egg. Now, notice how I tied the eggs in the above photo- with the tie on the top of the long side of the egg. I wish eggs came like this at the grocery store.
20 Minute Cinch Tee
So I was looking through the clearance rack at Target the other day, hoping to find some cheap tees to dress up with reverse applique. I was frustrated to find that nearly all of their clearance rack tees were at least 3 sizes too big. I like to buy my shirts to be a little big, but not that big. So I had a thought. Why not just cinch in the waist so that I could have a cute tunic to wear with leggings (my new obsession)? And yes, it actually worked! Materials: Oversized Tee 1/2 Wide Elastic Matching Thread Tutorial: Measure elastic around the smallest part of your waist. Sew the ends together. Turn your tee inside out. Pull the tee through your elastic hoop. Pin elastic to the shirt at both seams. This is where it gets a little tricky. Now sew all the way around using a zig zag stitch. Don't fret about getting this absolutely perfect. And that's it! Pair with some leggings and boots for a cute, fall look! You can even add a little belt for extra cuteness (:
The Maxi
Remember that one time I used to sew clothes? Well cross country traveling mixed with nausea every night really put a damper on my desire to sew. But I started getting the itch a few weeks ago with all of my gorgeous new fabric. So I decided to ease back into my sewing machine with a simple, fabulous especially if you're pregnant, maxi skirt. It's long and stretchy. top: Cozy / necklace: J.Crew / bangles: Forever 21 / shoes: Steve Madden My Maxi skirts are available for purchase in my store, leannebarlow.com.
Some of my clothes I've made.. Tut for apron dress pg 4 & seminole patchwk pg 5
Ok.. a couple of people have aksed me about the scrap apron dress and it's SUPER easy.. and so fantastic. It looks like a dress from the front.. but you can be wearing shorts underneath if it's hot (or a skirt.. or pants.. ) It's SOO versitile!!so here's a quick tut of the apron for ya... Really the whole this is almost just a big rectangle.. The top is a simple rectangle of fabric. For the one I have on.. the top is made of a soft white eyelet, and it's lined with a soft muslin. I make straps out of scrap fabric.. For the measurments of the top.. For the length of the top, I usully go about 2 inches above my waistline.. or an inch or so below my bustline. I then pin the lining to the fabric, inside out. Fold each 2inch strip in half and iron. ), then depending on the length of your top, another half way down on each side, so that the ends are pointing out. For the skirt of this apron top.. piece together a large panel of scraps. Voila!! I hope this helps..
Project 21 Week 23 – Crayon Alphabet
I have been really excited about this project for a while, ever since I spotted it here. I thought this was the cutest idea, and immediately rushed off to research where I could find nice cheap shadow boxes and crayons. Flash forward a few weeks once I had assembled all my supplies, and this is what you get: I chose the letter B to start in honor of my little guy Basel, my adorable long-haired dachshund puppy. Then once I had the letter sized appropriately I printed it out, cut the paper to size for my shadow box (purchased at Michaels, though I have my eye on some square frames at Ikea) and started cutting up my crayons. The original poster had also broken her crayons into pieces, but I like clean straight lines and edges so I cut mine with my Olfa blade. I don’t know about anyone else, but I grew up watching Sesame Street religiously and they did a segment about crayon production that still, to this day, is so vividly in my memory it is a bit scary.
