Mapping the world at war An interactive map highlights the shocking number of ongoing conflicts around the world While a handful of conflicts dominate international newswires, a host of bloody, unresolved wars continue to be played out across the globe to devastating human cost, underreported and, in certain instances, largely unnoticed by the wider world. These might not be seismic geopolitical events of the magnitude of the ongoing conflict in Syria, nor generally have Anglo-American interventions in the conflict zone to pique the interest of the international media. But the devastation they have wrought has been just as shocking. A new interactive map, compiled by humanitarian news agency IRIN, charts the spread of conflicts across the globe.

Japanese architects propose homes of the future Japanese architects including Sou Fujimoto, Atelier Bow-Wow, Kengo Kuma and Shigeru Ban have all designed houses of the future for a Tokyo exhibition (+ movie). House Vision 2016 includes 12 housing prototypes by notable Japanese architects and designers, as well as think tanks for construction and technology companies. Atelier Bow-Wow worked with Japanese design brand Muji to create Tanada Terrace Office, a prototype for paddy field housing. The stilted timber structure is designed as a workspace for digital nomads. It is intended to encourage city dwellers to support Japan's ageing agricultural communities, by working remotely and helping out during rice harvesting season.

And will human development prevent them from getting there? This map shows the average direction mammals, birds, and amphibians need to move to track hospitable climates as they shift across the landscape. How? Researchers from University of Washington and The Nature Conservancy modeled potential habitat for 2954 species using climate change projections and the climatic needs of each species.

History of Pearling - Pearling path The oyster beds on the north of Bahrain were the centre of a natural pearl fishery that dominated the Arabian Gulf from at least the 3rd century BC until the early 20th century. Exploding demand for pearls beginning in the 19th century produced a single product economy in Bahrain, centred in its then capital and the capital of Arabian Gulf pearling, Muharraq. Pearl exports contributed three quarters of Bahrain’s total exports in 1877, with most destined for Bombay, Persia and Turkey. Europe emerged as a major direct market for Bahrain’s pearl exports following the turn of the century, and by 1904-05 an estimated 97.3 per cent of the Gulf’s turnover in pearls was traded through Bahrain. The value of Bahrain’s pearl exports increased six fold between 1900 and 1912, when Indian merchants were joined in Bahrain by others from Paris, London and New York, all vying to secure the finest pearls at source. Pearl jewellery has been an object of intense desire since ancient times.
