Free Library In January of 2011 we started posting free short stories we thought might be of interest to Baen readers. The first stories were "Space Hero" by Patrick Lundrigan, the winner of the 2010 Jim Baen Memorial Short Story Contest, and "Tanya, Princess of Elves," by Larry Correia, author of Monster Hunter International and set in that universe. As new stories are made available, they will be posted on the main page, then added to this book (to save the Baen Barflies the trouble of doing it themselves).

THOUGHT PATTERNS: Bookstores I used to work in a smallish independent bookstore and it was truly one of the best jobs I ever had. To be surrounded by endless glorious volumes, to enter every morning into this multicolored world of words and pictures was truly a pleasure. I loved rearranging shelves (endlessly), lining up the books this way and that. One of my favorite things, though, was ordering books for the store (it almost completely fulfilled my shopping urges, mind you, I would always overdo it with the order :), and then anticipating eagerly their arrival. Books on photography, design, fashion, art... it would take me hours and hours to find their right spot in the bookstore, to display them properly, to sneak careful peeks through the pages.

Complicity and the Brain: Dynamics in Attractor Space Dr. Peter Henningsen peter@alifegames.com Abstract: This paper outlines a research program that is intended to look for the emergence of consciousness in computers. We argue that a good place to look is the space of Self-Organizing Networks of Attractor Neural Networks (SONofANNs). In the main part of the paper, we then specialize our investigation to Self-Organizing Hopfield Networks (SOHNs), and construct a model that can give rise to emergent semantic networks and brainwave processing, two new concepts introduced here.

Their phrasing is "to the World", not "of the World" (which is what your comment said). Just clarifying. by tml Aug 11

"Library to the World" is their own tagline (see for reference) - I don't think it's for us to "correct" that. by tml Aug 11
