Problems of the Month Problem solving is the cornerstone of doing mathematics. A problem that you can’t solve in less than a day is usually a problem that is similar to one that you have solved before. But in real life, a problem is a situation that confronts you and you don’t have an idea of where to even start. If we want our students to be problem solvers and mathematically powerful, we must model perseverance and challenge students with non-routine problems. Administrators, teachers and parents should facilitate and support students in the process of attacking and reasoning about the problems. The solution is not as important as the process of problem solving.

Actuarial Foundation Math The Actuarial Foundation is proud to launch an exciting curriculum resource aimed at engaging accelerated math students while also introducing them to the core principles of probability and statistics. Students take on the role of an actuary as they help an insurance company estimate the risk of storm activity and calculate potentially costly damages. Probability & Statistics: Modular Learning Exercises covers:

Coping With Math Anxiety What Is Math Anxiety? A famous stage actress was once asked if she had ever suffered from stage-fright, and if so how she had gotten over it. She laughed at the interviewer’s naive assumption that, since she was an accomplished actress now, she must not feel that kind of anxiety. She assured him that she had always had stage fright, and that she had never gotten over it. Instead, she had learned to walk on stage and perform—in spite of it. Power Basic Learners are guided toward mastery of essential math concepts from basic operations through fractions, decimals, and percents and the fundamentals of algebra and geometry. Through practice, review, word problems, and real-world activities, this program is designed to assure that students of all abilities master essential math concepts. Power Basics’ on-level content and below-level readability pack a powerful punch. Designed to provide students with on-level content at a controlled reading level, the Power Basics ® program includes the following components: Student Text, Workbook, Test Pack, and accompanying teacher guide or answer key for all components.

Dimensions Home A film for a wide audience! Nine chapters, two hours of maths, that take you gradually up to the fourth dimension. Mathematical vertigo guaranteed! dy/dan » algebra So you have here a fairly straightforward carnival estimation game, which I decided to complicate by filling up a smaller container with the same kind of (horrid) malted eggs and making that quantity known. I surveyed my students, my math-department colleagues, some of their students, my principal, and the central office staff. A little over 100 guesses all told. I tagged each guess with the following metadata: name, guess type (gut check, visual estimate, math computation),job description (student, math teacher, staff member, principal),current math class (eg. Algebra 1, Geometry, AP Calculus, etc.)

Geometry Labs Geometry Labs is a book of hands-on activities that use manipulatives to teach important ideas in geometry. These 78 activities have enough depth to provide excellent opportunities for discussion and reflection in both middle school and high school classrooms. Middle school teachers will find many labs that help prepare students for high school geometry by getting them to think visually and become familiar with fundamental concepts, figures, and vocabulary. Teachers of high school geometry —whether traditional, inductive, or technology-based— will find many labs that approach key topics in their curriculum from a different point of view.

CME Project About the Program. The CME Project, developed by EDC’s Center for Mathematics Education and published by Pearson, is a coherent, four-year, NSF-funded high school mathematics program designed around how knowledge is organized and generated within mathematics: the themes of algebra, geometry, and analysis. The CME Project sees these branches of mathematics not only as compartments for certain kinds of results, but also as descriptors for methods and approaches—the habits of mind that determine how knowledge is organized and generated within mathematics itself. As such, they deserve to be centerpieces of a curriculum, not its by-products.
