How to Think. When I applied for my faculty job at the MIT Media Lab, I had to write a teaching statement.

How to Think

One of the things I proposed was to teach a class called “How to Think,” which would focus on how to be creative, thoughtful, and powerful in a world where problems are extremely complex, targets are continuously moving, and our brains often seem like nodes of enormous networks that constantly reconfigure. In the process of thinking about this, I composed 10 rules, which I sometimes share with students. I’ve listed them here, followed by some practical advice on implementation. 1. A recent study he conducted with a colleague, Drew Bailey, led Geary to this epiphany.

If Modern Humans Are So Smart, Why Are Our Brains Shrinking?

The aim of their investigation was to explore how cranial size changed as our species adapted to an increasingly complex social environment between 1.9 million and 10,000 years ago. Since that period predates the first alphabets, the researchers had no written record with which to gauge the social milieu of our predecessors. Consequently, the Missouri team used population density as a proxy for social complexity, reasoning that when more people are concentrated in a geographic region, trade springs up between groups, there is greater division of labor, the gathering of food becomes more efficient, and interactions among individuals become richer and more varied.

Bailey and Geary found population density did indeed track closely with brain size, but in a surprising way. When population numbers were low, as was the case for most of our evolution, the cranium kept getting bigger. Abundance Tapestry — Creating A Life Of Abundance. The Happiness Project. The more complex work supports a command of dramatic text. Students work on a series of progressively complex exercises to develop an ability to first improvise, then to access an emotional life, and finally to bring the spontaneity of improvisation and the richness of personal response to textual work. That’s not really news, but it may mean more than you think, on a day-to-day level. In each moment, everything around you is constantly changing, and it never changes back. It’s always new. Some changes are subtle, some dramatic, but all of it is changing. Life is uncertain by its very nature. No matter what is happening right now, It will never happen again. Designing a Lucky Life. “Luck is the residue of design.” – Branch Rickey I don’t believe that luck is a supernatural thing that we have no control over.

Designing a Lucky Life

It’s not represented by four leaf clovers and gold pots at the end of the rainbow. Luck is simply the result of some of the many random events in life bouncing more in your favor than before. The best part is that you can make a lot of choices in life that will cause luck to pop up more and more. You can be that lucky person who gets a raise or finds a great job.
