The Amazon Mechanical Turk (MTurk) is a crowdsourcing Internet marketplace that enables individuals or businesses (known as Requesters) to co-ordinate the use of human intelligence to perform tasks that computers are currently unable to do.

Amazon Mechanical Turk

It is one of the sites of Amazon Web Services. The Requesters are able to post tasks known as HITs (Human Intelligence Tasks), such as choosing the best among several photographs of a store-front, writing product descriptions, or identifying performers on music CDs. Workers (called Providers in Mechanical Turk's Terms of Service, or, more colloquially, Turkers) can then browse among existing tasks and complete them for a monetary payment set by the Requester. To place HITs, the requesting programs use an open Application Programming Interface, or the more limited MTurk Requester site.[2] Requesters are restricted to US-based entities.[3] Name[edit] History, HIT types, and user demographics[edit] Worker and Requester Interfaces[edit] API[edit]

Library launches alternate reality game ahead of Comic-Con

The public library has launched an alternate reality game that participants say is the perfect way to prepare for the upcoming four-day expo. “An alternate reality game is an interactive story that takes place in real time, in a real world setting such as here in Central Library, which involves players solving puzzles and perfuming activities,” said Erwin Magbanua, Special Events Librarian.

Magbanua said the Central Library is one of just a handful of libraries across the country that has ever tried something like this. The clues appear in email form and online as well as in the library. “I think it’s pretty cool,” said John Roberts who is participating in the game. Cory Doctorow’s craphound.com » News.

For example, Katayama Osamu compares symbolically the launch of the Famicom with the opening of Tokyo Disneyland as defining moments for the transformation of Japan as a society of leisure: Its launch coincided with the opening of Tokyo Disneyland, an event many saw as marking a shift in Japanese popular culture from the compulsive work ethic of postwar reconstruction towards a greater interest in entertainment and leisure activities (Katayama, 1996, p. 161). Several business decisions, but also accidental events (Gorges, 2011), marked the entrance of Nintendo in the video game industry and the home console market up to its huge success in Japan[17], and then in other worldwide territories.

The Famicom/NES success is a good example of the confluence of the three circuits of technology, culture and marketing (Kline et al., 2003). Utrecht: Utrecht University, 2003. This paper proposes a definition of games. I describe the classic game model, a list of six features that are necessary and sufficient for something to be a game. Keywords Game definition, game history, transmedial gaming; computer game history. Introduction Why is there an affinity between computers and games? My intention here is to claim the existence of a classic game model; a standard model for creating games, a model that appears to have been constant for several thousand years. As demonstrated by Bernard Suits (1978), the simplest way to test a game definition is to test it for being either too broad or too narrow.
