Die Theorie stammt aus den zwanziger Jahren und zu seinen wichtigsten Vertretern gehören unter anderem Tolman, Piaget, Köhler, Wertheimer und Brundner, die mit ihren Versuchen die Theorien des Kognitivismus aufstellen konnten und maßgeblich an ihrem Fortbestehen teilhaben. Der Begriff Kognition leitet sich vom Lateinischen Wort cognoscere ab, was so viel bedeutet wie die „Gesamtheit aller Prozesse, die mit dem Wahrnehmen und Erkennen zusammenhängen“. Kognitivistische Ansätze beschäftigen sich daher mitunter mit dem Lernen durch Einsicht.
