GraphExeter: New graphene-based material. (Phys.org) -- The most transparent, lightweight and flexible material ever for conducting electricity has been invented by a team from the University of Exeter.

GraphExeter: New graphene-based material

Called GraphExeter, the material could revolutionise the creation of wearable electronic devices, such as clothing containing computers, phones and MP3 players. GraphExeter could also be used for the creation of ‘smart’ mirrors or windows, with computerised interactive features. Since this material is also transparent over a wide light spectrum, it could enhance by more than 30% the efficiency of solar panels. Adapted from graphene, GraphExeter is much more flexible than indium tin oxide (ITO), the main conductive material currently used in electronics. ITO is becoming increasingly expensive and is a finite resource, expected to run out in 2017.

These research findings are published in Advanced Materials, a leading journal in materials science. Explore further: New light on novel additive manufacturing approach. Soft-Feeling Conductive Textiles. Product Details The two pieces of fabric pictured in the sample look and feel just like regular fabric, but they have a special coating that conducts electricity. This coating can be applied to any fabric, and has virtually no effect on the fabric’s strength, feel, flexibility, and (for certain formulations) color.

You could never tell this fabric had any special coating just by feeling it. These conductive textiles are currently used to make pressure sensors, antennas, flexible heaters, and static control clothing. Use this coating on sweaters or automobile upholstery to eliminate static in winter. This coating contains no metal and no carbon – it is a polymer that is inherently conductive. Imagine engineering wall coverings with this fabric—you could simply insert push-pin light bulbs. Almost any type of fabric can be coated in any pattern, and with any level of conductivity. This Nickel and Copper anti-radiation coated polyester mesh offers fairly good transparency and excellent corrosion resistance. Better than 50dB of attenuation makes this the perfect choice for indoor window screens and shielding which requires air circulation. Flexible and light weight, cuts easily for custom sizing. Can be used indoors or out. Some of the most frequently used conductive fabrics, tend to be the most available. LessEMF is a retail company that stocks a great range of conductive fabrics for electro magnetic field shielding. It seems like some of their fabrics are manufactured by Shieldex, but LessEMF renames the fabrics for their own sales and so it is unclear which ones are really the same.

I’ve tried to match a few up through comparison: Shieldex: MedTex E 130 DS = LessEMF: Stretch conductive fabric Shieldex: Armor RTF = LessEMF: Zelt Conductive Fabric Shieldex >> (USA, DE) Balingen 1 x 20 cm = 4 Ohm 0.5 x 20 cm = 7 Ohm Highly conductive, nice and MedTex E 130 DS 1 x 20 cm = 13 Ohm 0.5 x 20 cm = 23 Ohm Super similar, if not the same as LessEMF’s Stretch Conductive Fabric. MedTex P 180 OS From the small sample I have it looks like a nice stretch conductive fabric to work with. Stretch Conductive Fabric KobaKant. I have recently ordered sparkfun conductive fabric (MedTex180), which is similar to LessEMF stretchy fabric but much thicker and stiffer. The structure of the fabric is more like a rib than Lycra. The front side is very shiny and you can see the rib structure from the back side. It stretches very well on once direction but not at all for the other.
