RCA students develop SaltyCo fabrics using freshwater-free plants. Students from the Royal College of Art have made fabrics from plants grown in seawater, providing a potential solution for the currently freshwater-intensive fashion and textile industries.

RCA students develop SaltyCo fabrics using freshwater-free plants

While cotton is notoriously water-hungry, requiring as much as 20,000 litres of freshwater to produce just a kilogram of the material, these fabrics are made from a salt-tolerant plant that thrives in seawater. Insulating jacket liners, faux leather and clothing like t-shirts and trousers could all potentially be made with the fabrics. The students – an interdisciplinary team from the Imperial College London and the Royal College of Art – came together to find a way to tackle the global overconsumption of freshwater. This led to them to the idea of using salt-tolerant plants, and following promising early testing, they are now planning to launch a start-up named SaltyCo to bring their textile products to market.

JCPCDR Architecture builds Flying Table with seat belt-like mechanism

Designed by Jean-Christophe Petillault from JCPCDR Architecture, the Flying Table is suspended from four seat belt straps, attached to a docking element fixed onto the ceiling. These straps are wound around a remote-controlled roller shutter motor, enabling the table to gradually lower down to the desired height. The oak table can be left suspended by the straps to suit the height of the user, or lowered to the floor and stood on its four legs, which fold out from underneath. When the table is brought to the floor, the straps can be detached and retracted back to the ceiling until they are needed again. The 'Wild' Effect? Why Hiking Is Surging in Popularity in the U.S.

The automaker used that model to prove demand and raise money to finance the production capacity. It happened with virtually all new vehicles launched by Tesla, most famously with the Model 3, but orders generally quickly slow down after the buzz of the unveiling, which generally happens a week or two later. With the Cybertruck, Tesla also managed to secure an impressive number of reservations. After the unveiling, Tesla started taking pre-orders for the truck with a $100 deposit per reservation. CEO Elon Musk announced that Tesla received over 250,000 reservations for the Cybertruck within a week of unveiling the vehicle. Tesla said that it plans to launch the two higher-end versions of the Cybertruck in late 2021.

Elbow Sock offers a way of keeping your clothes clean while following this practice, and encouraging others to do the same. Raw Color's design is actually a DIY hack, rather than a product concept. The Eindhoven-based studio suggests you simply take a pair of scissors to any sock. "In this period, we wanted to simulate the DIY mentality, to think about something that everybody can do, with an object everybody owns, without machinery," explained studio co-founder Christoph Brach. "While brainstorming, we found out that the sock has the perfect shape, with its heel, to fit onto an elbow," he told Dezeen. The design is based around the fact that germs can survive on fabric for up to five days after transference. Lianjie Wu designs affordable homes that are deliberately left unfinished. Sun Dayong designs wearable coronavirus protection shield. Chinese architect Sun Dayong has created a conceptual design for a body shield that would protect a wearer during a coronavirus outbreak by using UV light to sterilise itself.

Named Be a Bat Man, the mobile safety device would be for "people who are exposed to the dangerous situation during the coronavirus emergency", said Sun Dayong, who co-founded architecture studio Penda.

The shield would be made from carbon fibre supports shaped like batwings that would be worn like a backpack. A PVC film would stretch between these supports, like the membrane of a bat's wing. Wires embedded in the plastic would heat up to a temperature high enough to kill any pathogens on them, creating a sterile environment inside for the wearer.
