Scientists explore links between genetics, gut microbiome and memory

A new study identified a lactate as a key memory-boosting molecular messenger in mouse models. Mice fed Lactobacillus microbes had increased levels of GABA in their brains. Source: DOE/Pacific Northwestern National Laboratory A new study is among the first to trace the molecular connections between genetics, the gut microbiome and memory in a mouse model bred to resemble the diversity of the human population. While tantalizing links between the gut microbiome and brain have previously been found, a team of researchers from two U.S. “Our study shows that the microbiome might partner with genetics to affect memory,” said Janet Jansson, a microbial ecologist at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory and a corresponding author of the study. Scientists know that mice which have been fed microbes that benefit health, called probiotics, experience several positive benefits.

Abstract. Destroying Nature Unleashes Infectious Diseases. That’s why experts say it’s critical to understand underlying causes. “Any emerging disease in the last 30 or 40 years has come about as a result of encroachment into wild lands and changes in demography,” says Peter Daszak, a disease ecologist and the president of EcoHealth. Emerging infectious diseases are either new types of pathogens or old ones that have mutated to become novel, as the flu does every year. AIDS, for example, crossed into humans from chimpanzees in the 1920s when bush-meat hunters in Africa killed and butchered them. Diseases have always come out of the woods and wildlife and found their way into human populations — the plague and malaria are two examples.

But emerging diseases have quadrupled in the last half-century, experts say, largely because of increasing human encroachment into habitat, especially in disease “hot spots” around the globe, mostly in tropical regions. Public health experts have begun to factor ecology into their models. Several Ancient Viruses Have Been Discovered in 15,000-Year-Old Glacial Ice. In 2015, a team of scientists from the United States and China traveled to Tibet to gather samples of Earth's oldest glacial ice.

Several Ancient Viruses Have Been Discovered in 15,000-Year-Old Glacial Ice

Earlier this month, they published a paper on the pre-print server bioRxiv detailing their discovery of 28 new virus groups in the 15,000-year-old ice - and warning that climate change could free the ancient viruses into the modern world. The team drilled 50 meters (164 feet) down into the glacier to obtain two ice cores, which then underwent a three-step decontamination protocol. After that, the researchers used microbiology techniques to identify microbes in the samples. Those techniques revealed 33 virus groups - including, notably, 28 ancient viruses that scientists had never seen before. The Facts:Multiple studies and examples have shown how sound, frequency and vibration can literally alter physical material matter.

Research Shows We Can Heal With Vibration, Frequency & Sound

Research has also shown that sound, frequencies and vibration can be used as a significant healing method for various ailments.Reflect On:How plausible would it be for these interventions to become a regular part of therapy, just as much as pharmaceutical drugs are now? Cymatics is a very interesting topic. It illustrates how sound frequencies move through a particular medium such as water, air, or sand and as a result directly alter physical matter. There are a number of pictures all over the internet as well as youtube videos that demonstrate how matter (particles) adjust to different sounds and different frequencies of sound. When it comes to ancient knowledge, sound, frequency and vibration have always been perceived as powerful forces that can influence and alter life all the way down to the cellular level. How WHOLE Turmeric Heals the Damaged Brain. Injection of virus-delivered gene silencer blocks ALS degeneration, saves motor function.

Writing in Nature Medicine, an international team headed by researchers at University of California San Diego School of Medicine describe a new way to effectively deliver a gene-silencing vector to adult amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) mice, resulting in long-term suppression of the degenerative motor neuron disorder if treatment vector is delivered prior to disease onset, and blockage of disease progression in adult animals if treatment is initiated when symptoms have already appeared.

The findings are published in the December 23, 2019 online issue of the journal Nature Medicine. Martin Marsala, MD, professor in the Department of Anesthesiology at UC San Diego School of Medicine and a member of the Sanford Consortium for Regenerative Medicine, is senior author of the study. ALS is a neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. Migraines Linked to High Sodium Levels in Cerebrospinal Fluid. Summary: According to researchers, people who suffer from migraines have higher sodium concentrations in their cerebrospinal fluid.

Migraines Linked to High Sodium Levels in Cerebrospinal Fluid

Source: RSNA. Migraine sufferers have significantly higher sodium concentrations in their cerebrospinal fluid than people without the condition, according to the first study to use a technique called sodium MRI to look at migraine patients. The findings were presented today at the annual meeting of the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA). Migraine, a type of headache characterized by severe head pain, and sometimes nausea and vomiting, is one of the most common headache disorders, affecting about 18 percent of women and 6 percent of men. Some migraines are accompanied by vision changes or odd sensations in the body known as auras. Dr. The researchers recruited 12 women, mean age 34, who had been clinically evaluated for migraine. Second Brain Found in Heart Neurons - Trust Your Gut Feelings. The idea of transplanted cellular memory emerged as early as 1920 in the film "Les Mains d'Orleac" written by science fiction writer Maurice Renard.

Second Brain Found in Heart Neurons - Trust Your Gut Feelings

A second brain in the heart is now much more than an idea. Prominent medical experts have recently discovered that many recipients of heart transplants are inheriting donors' memories and consequently report huge changes in their tastes, their personality, and, most extraordinarily, in their emotional memories. Today new science is testing the theory that the heart is involved in our feelings.

Scientists 'Clear' Alzheimer's Plaque From Mice Using Only Light And Sound

Research led by MIT has found strobe lights and a low pitched buzz can be used to recreate brain waves lost in the disease, which in turn remove plaque and improve cognitive function in mice engineered to display Alzheimer's-like behaviour. It's a little like using light and sound to trigger their own brain waves to help fight the disease. This technique hasn't been clinically trialled in humans as yet, so it's too soon to get excited - brain waves are known to work differently in humans and mice. But, if replicated, these early results hint at a possible cheap and drug-free way to treat the common form of dementia. So how does it work? It's not the first study to investigate the role sound can play in clearing the brain of the tangles and clumps of tau and amyloid proteins at least partially responsible for the disease. Scientists are tasking a language-processing Artificial Intelligence (AI) with detecting and diagnosing the early signs of language-associated cognitive impairments in people with failing livers.

In their findings, the researchers report finding evidence that this cognitive function is likely to be restored following a liver transplant. Liver failure and cognitive function In their paper, published in the journal npj Digital Medicine (formerly Nature Digital Medicine), the researchers explained how they used natural language processing (NPL) to evaluate electronic message samples from patients with chronic liver failure. This disease is associated with transient cognitive abnormalities. These include diminished attention spans, loss of memory, and a reduced ability for an individual to detect and respond to their surroundings. This is due to a failing liver that can no longer properly remove toxins from the blood, allowing them to cross the brain-blood barrier. Natural language processing. Chronic inflammation removes motivation by reducing dopamine in the brain.

Why do we feel listless when we are recovering from an illness? The answer is, apparently, that low-grade chronic inflammation interferes with the dopaminergic signaling system in the brain that motivates us to do things. The research carried out at Emory University explains the links between the reduced release of dopamine in the brain, the motivation to do things, and the presence of an inflammatory reaction in the body. Cause of antibiotic resistance identified. Scientists have confirmed for the first time that bacteria can change form to avoid being detected by antibiotics in the human body. Studying samples from elderly patients with recurring urinary tract infections, the Newcastle University team used state-of-the art techniques to identify that a bacteria can lose its cell wall—the common target of many groups of antibiotics. The research by the Errington lab which turns on its head current thinking about the bacteria's ability to survive without a cell wall, known as "L-form switching", is published today in Nature Communications. The World Health Organisation has identified antibiotic resistance as one of the biggest threats to global health, food security, and development today.
