A personal goal for every Swedish pupil. 7 maart 2013 - Frontrunner Sweden has implemented some cutting edge reforms in their school system.

A personal goal for every Swedish pupil

Swedish Ambassador Håkan Emsgård explains the ‘goal-based-system’ and the specifics of financing schools, leaving the pupils free to choose. “Since 2006 our government has made the reform of the Swedish school system a top priority”, Emsgård explains. “We introduced a goal based school system. This makes it clearer what you want to achieve. On the Agenda - #ISTP2013. Best conditions for teacher appraisal. 13 maart 2013 - While Rabia Bouzian, ScienceGuide Student of the Year 2009, was teaching in the Glassroom about her peer-coach project for students at the Hogeschool Rotterdam, the international delegates of the ISTP were debating the potential use and misuse of teacher feedback and appraisal systems.

Best conditions for teacher appraisal

According to Barbara Ischinger, director of Education and Skills at OECD, a good system for evaluation and appraisal is welcome: “According to our research most of the teachers are very positive regarding feedback from their peers. They claim that good evaluation has a significant impact on their career and development as a professional. Public appraisal from principals and peers can give a strong boost for their self-esteem.” Ischinger says this form of appraisal is given too little attention and continuity. “1 in 4 teachers says they have never been given feedback on their performance.”

Creativity, inspiration and courage in teaching The optimum conditions for appraisal.

Teaching excellence takes the next step

What are lessons learned? How can this be brought into the international debate? Dutch education minister Marja van Bijsterveldt connects the dots with an eye on the 'Obama Summit' in Amsterdam 2013. Last week, Roosevelt Academy and Harvard's Derek Bok Center concluded their second workshop on excellent teaching. Two experts from Harvard, Terry Aladjem and Ellen Sarkisian trained senior instructors from Dutch university colleges and universities of applied sciences in innovative techniques like microteaching.

Teachers as mentors Dutch education minister Marja van Bijsterveldt opened the event with a speech emphasizing the important role teachers have as learning facilitators. "Much more, it does ask for a motivation, curiosity and a broad interest. Bouwstenen voor Obama-summit. Duncan: U.S. is being out-educated. Duncan: U.S. is being out-educated 9 februari 2012 - Obama’s Secretary of Education, Arne Duncan, spoke at a Harvard seminar about the importance of teachers for tackling pressing issues of society.

“The only thing our students lead the world in is self-esteem,” stated Duncan in his speech. "I want to underline that great schools and great teachers are the most effective anti-poverty tool of all," stated Arne Duncan during his speech at the Harvard School of Education. Addressing an audience at the Askwith Forum, Duncan underlined the role of teacher evaluation systems and how they could be implemented effectively. "What drives me every day is the recognition that we have this huge untapped academic and social potential that our nation is leaving on the table. "We need to push very, very hard in schools" 30 november 2012 - Secretary of Education Arne Duncan of the USA continues to lay out his priorities for president Obama's second term.

"We need to push very, very hard in schools"

It is clear he will remain on his post. Duncan emphasizes teacher preparation is broken and that the best educators need to be teaching the highest-need children. In remarks at the two-day forum in Washington of the Foundation for Excellence in Education, run by former Florida Governor Jeb Bush, Duncan said he has an "ambitious" second-term agenda that includes holding the line on initiatives he started during his first four years. This makes it very clear, that president Obama will keep his highly succesful and appreciated education-czar in his cabinet.

New strategy USA looks outside. 23 november 2012 - “Applying lessons learned from other countries to drive excellence and innovation in the U.S. and abroad.”

New strategy USA looks outside

In America’s international education strategy the upcoming Summit of the Teaching Profession in Amsterdam plays a key role as an agenda setting focuspoint. The international strategy for 2012–16 affirms the U.S. Education Department’s commitment to preparing today’s youth for a globalized world, and to engaging with the international community to improve education. It reflects ongoing work in implementing international education programs, participating in international benchmarking activities, and working closely with other countries and multilateral organizations to engage in strategic dialogue. What about the Teacher Summit? 4 februari 2013 - Within a month Amsterdam will be crowded with the world’s best teachers and most innovative thinkers on the teaching profession.

What about the Teacher Summit?

The 3rd edition of the celebrated International Summit on the Teaching Profession (ISTP) will take place on March 13-15 in The Netherlands. The Summit was initiated by U.S. President Obama together with his Education Minister Arne Duncan, in order to start a debate on the ingredients for the best teachers. The upcoming Summit will be the first one organized outside the U.S. The organization lies in the hands of the OECD together with the Dutch Education Ministry and Education International (global union federation of teachers' trade unions). Holding Education Hostage by Diane Ravitch. For weeks, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg and the United Federation of Teachers have been battling over the issue of teacher evaluation.

Governor Andrew Cuomo set a deadline for them to reach an agreement, but they failed to do so, potentially costing the city schools hundreds of millions of dollars. The state education commissioner, John King, jumped into the fray by threatening to withhold over a billion dollars in state and federal aid if there was no settlement between the parties. Now, Governor Cuomo says that he may intervene and take charge of the stalemated negotiations. What’s going on here? Why can’t the mayor and the union reach an agreement? The imbroglio began with the Obama administration’s Race to the Top program. The new Secretary of Education Arne Duncan huddled with his advisors and decided to create the so-called Race to the Top, a competition among states for the new funds.

So enthusiastic was a rumoured favourite for chief inspector of schools, Sir Michael Wilshaw, about the prospect of more power and control that he was reported in February as arguing for a Pale Rider model of headship. Likening head teachers to Clint Eastwood-type lone warriors, he argued that we need "heads with ego" who "enjoy power and enjoy exercising that power". All of this begs the question: where is the Government's parallel vision for the future of the teaching profession? Globally, the evidence is stacking up that strong, self-confident teaching professions are vital to the outstanding status Gove demands.

Ben Levin, who helped create one of the world's most praised education systems, has a tip for school leaders.

"One of the things they need to be is creatively subordinate," he says with a grin. Professor Levin should know. Now at the University of Toronto, he was deputy education minister in Ontario when it transformed its troubled education system into one which is widely acclaimed by both the OECD and Pisa assessments, not least for pulling off the trick of equity and excellence for all. Unusually, the Government concentrated on a few basic principles underpinned by years of research findings. In short, the system aimed to raise standards for all, narrow gaps and increase participation rates, and to do so by building capacity at every level. Furthermore, the Government deliberately built a respectful collaboration with schools, teachers, pupils and parents.

A warning to college profs from a high school teacher. For more than a decade now we have heard that the high-stakes testing obsession in K-12 education that began with the enactment of No Child Left Behind 11 years ago has resulted in high school graduates who don’t think as analytically or as broadly as they should because so much emphasis has been placed on passing standardized tests. Here, an award-winning high school teacher who just retired, Kenneth Bernstein, warns college professors what they are up against. Bernstein, who lives near Washington, D.C. serves as a peer reviewer for educational journals and publishers, and he is nationally known as the blogger “teacherken.”
