Global community: Let´s implement a Global Basic Income Guarantee :)

Lacking a coherent narrative to make sense of the World life becomes increasingly chaotic and confusing. It sounds cliché and it is, but this decade is the most important in human history because there is so much at stake. The Spark of Hope. Here’s one of the big ideas we need to fight the power of the elite.

The Spark of Hope

Known as the “Heart of India”, this central state has the country’s highest levels of malnutrition and largest tribal population. The ethnic majority here are the Bhil: under the classification system inherited from the British administration they are an “aboriginal tribe”; under the Indian government’s policy of positive discrimination towards disadvantaged communities and castes a “scheduled tribe”. A group of Bhil women were gathered on mats before their mud and straw homes, built some distance from the other village houses. Mamatabai Punjraj told me the government had given her a bigha (about a quarter of a hectare) of land to farm. But a few months later she fell from a tree while collecting firewood and broke her left leg and hand. As in many villages, the landlord, who inherited his land and is of a high caste, is the only employer and lender.

Guaranteed minimum income: how much would it cost? (updated)

But, before arguing about those issues, it’s useful to consider whether a basic income is feasible at all and, if so, what kinds of tax policies, and adjustments to other welfare policies, would be required to support it. I’ve considered the relatively easy case of a guaranteed minimum income, rather than a universal basic income paid to everyone, as advocated by Philippe von Parijs and others. I’m going to work through it with a more or less realistic numerical example, with numbers chosen to simplify the calculations. The first simplification will be to consider only adults (I’ll try to explain my reasoning for children if I get time). Three trends that will create demand for an Unconditional Basic Income. The digitization of our economy will bring with it a new generation of radical economic ideologies, of which Bitcoin is arguably the first.

Three trends that will create demand for an Unconditional Basic Income

For those with assets, technological savvy, and a sense of adventure, the state is the enemy and a cryptographic currency is the solution. But for those more focused on the decline of the middle classes, the collapse of the entry-level jobs market, and the rise of free culture, the state is an ally, and the solution might look something like an unconditional basic income. Before I explain why this concept is going to be creeping into the political debate across the developed world, let me spell out how a system like this would look: For a universal minimum income. I once worked in a call centre where a few of the interviewers would be regularly rostered to do phone surveys about female incontinence products.

For a universal minimum income

Asking strangers whether they lost a teaspoon, a tablespoon or more in volume per occasion is a tough gig. Then again, the horror of the role was somewhat less visceral than that experienced by a worker I’d once represented who had to manually slit the throats of chickens at a poultry factory. At Centrelink he had listed his occupation as ‘killer’. What strikes me about a dirty job isn’t that it needs doing – it’s that someone has to do it to get by. There’s no other choice for them. This shouldn’t be our legacy. Imagine the creativity, innovation and enterprise that would be unleashed if every citizen were guaranteed a living.

Collectively we create enough value for everyone to receive a universal income. Universal Basic Income.

Quand Barjavel imaginait le revenu de base. The Libertarian Case for a Basic Income. Guaranteeing a minimum income to the poor is better than our current system of welfare, Zwolinski argues.

The Libertarian Case for a Basic Income

And it can be justified by libertarian principles. This morning, I did a short interview with the Cato Institute about the libertarian case for a Basic Income Guarantee. The immediate stimulus for the conversation was the recent Swiss proposal to pay each and every and every citizen 2,500 francs (about 2,800 USD) per month. But conversation quickly turned to the question of whether some form of basic income proposal might be compatible with libertarianism. Some of my colleagues at Bleeding Heart Libertarians have certainly expressed enthusiasm for it in the past. Of course, as with any policy proposal, the details matter a lot. René Heeskens - Earth dividend and Global Basic Income: a promising partnership. By René Heeskens GBI Foundation Introduction The analysis in this discussion paper is a follow-up of a debate at the annual meeting (2005) of the GBI Foundation about an earth dividend model for the introduction of a Global Basic Income (GBI).

René Heeskens - Earth dividend and Global Basic Income: a promising partnership

The advantages and disadvantages of the earth dividend model were discussed in comparison with the prevailing basic income concept, which is a universal benefit paid to all by a nation-state and funded through taxes or premiums. The earth dividend model that was discussed is very different. In this model the basic income is not provided as a social security benefit and it is not funded through taxes or premiums. Citizen's dividend. In the United States, the idea can be traced back to Thomas Paine's essay, Agrarian Justice,[1] which is also considered one of the earliest proposals for a social security system.

Citizen's dividend

Thomas Paine summarized his view by stating that "Men did not make the earth. It is the value of the improvements only, and not the earth itself, that is individual property. Every proprietor owes to the community a ground rent for the land which he holds. " Implementations and Proposals[edit] The Alaska Model: a citizen's income in practice - Politics in Spires. The Alaska Model: a citizen's income in practice - Politics in Spires

It’s often dismissed as a utopian idea. However, a basic income, or something very close to it, exists today in Alaska. It’s called the Permanent Fund Dividend (PFD) or sometimes “the Alaska Dividend.” The PFD has been paying annual dividends to Alaskans since 1982 with no conditions except citizenship, residency, and the willingness to fill out a form. After following the Alaska Dividend since 1999, I want to share six lessons that supporters of progressive economic policy should learn from what I call “the Alaska model,” but first some basic background.

In 1956, Alaska ratified a constitution recognizing joint ownership of unoccupied land and natural resources. Planetary dividend Fund. How to end global poverty: Just give money to the poor – Opinion – ABC Religion & Ethics. Poverty may be the natural condition of human beings, but it is not inevitable. Extreme scarcity, like the ancient scourges of cholera or polio, has been eliminated by our own efforts from most of the world.

We could eliminate it entirely if we chose. The world as a whole is now so rich that we could easily afford to simply give every destitute person an unearned claim on our collective economic wealth sufficient to lift them out of extreme scarcity. Mexico tried giving poor people cash instead of food. It worked. In the United States, most government aid takes the form of in-kind transfers: that is, the government gives you stuff, or a voucher to buy specific stuff, rather than just cash to buy whatever you like. That has led to a panoply of programs — food stamps, housing assistance, Medicaid, insurance subsidies — that are each focused on a particular purpose.

But there's only value in giving people, say, food rather than money if they wouldn't have used the money to buy food anyway. And a new study suggests that when people in Mexico got cash rather than food aid, they spent it on… food. In the study, Naval Postgraduate School's Jesse Cunha looks at the Mexican government's food assistance program, known as Programa de Apoyo Alimentario (loosely translated to Food Aid Program, or PAL). "Participating households receive monthly transfers (trucked into the villages) consisting of ten common food items, such as corn flour, beans, rice, oil, and powdered milk," Cunha explains.

The Robot Economy and the Crisis of Capitalism: Why We Need Universal Basic Income. The material prosperity that capitalism has wrought is the product of technology, as well as markets (and social norms and state institutions). Markets enhance the efficiency of allocation of resources - such as human labour - between competing projects, while technological innovations enhance the productivity of our use of those resources, the ability to produce more with less. As Keynes prophesised in his famous essay, "Economic Possibilities for our Grandchildren" (1930), the seemingly relentless trend of rising productivity promises finally to end the "economic problem" - the struggle to overcome scarcity that has characterised the human condition since our beginning. Finally, we can turn as a society to considering what our enormous wealth can do for us, rather than what we must do to get it.

Members of BIEN include academics, students and social policy practitioners as well as people actively engaged in political, social and religious organisations. They vary in terms of disciplinary backgrounds and political affiliations no less than in terms of age and citizenship.

Basic Income, a new human right. Fixing Poverty with a Basic Income Guarantee. Thinking Utopian: How about a universal basic income? In light of the recent Oregon Medicaid study, several people have discussed the idea of taking parts of the social insurance system and replacing them with cash benefits. This naturally brings up the debate about whether it should be a policy goal for the United States to adopt a universal basic income (UBI). These poverty-level targeted incomes are universal and unconditional, so everyone would get them regardless of their income, status or work participation. Basic income versus the robots.

Revenu de base. Missing Public Discussions: Universal Basic Income. Jeez, I just spent the better part of my "free" time over the last 13 days trying to get a line on the world economy, with an effort to shed light on the Unistat economy. In a world where innovation in service delivery and value for money are ever more vital for government credibility, innovation on poverty reduction is deeply absent. It certainly has been from recent federal and provincial budgets in Canada. From Washington to Ottawa to London to Paris, austerity, in different measures and calibrations, has taken the place of innovation. We do not and have not taken a fundamental new approach to poverty reduction in a quarter of a century. Film version Française.
