Philosophy of Design: a meta-theoretical structure for design theory

Terence Love Love Design & Research Perth, Western Australia tlove@love.com.au www.love.com.au Abstract This paper focuses on the structure and dynamic of theory in design research. Keywords: philosophy of design, design theory, epistemology, ontology, design philosophy This paper is a contribution to the study of Philosophy of Design. Philosophy of Design is different from design philosophy. The term design philosophy has also been used to describe the study of such questions. In alignment with this philosophical perspective, the capitalised Design Theory is used here to refer to the sub-discipline in which the role , validity, coherence and utility of theories and concepts pertaining to design are researched.

Coyne and his associates3,9-13 have written extensively on the application of a variety of post-positivist outlooks to design research. Broadbent15 discussed theory building in the study of design. 1. Design Professionalism: Definition - What is a Profession? 1.1 What is a profession?

Design Professionalism: Definition - What is a Profession?

Given the purpose of this treatise, a mere attempt to define or simply to conduct an examination of design professionalism would, I believe, be inadequate. In order to responsibly define design professionalism we must first fundamentally understand what a profession is and what conditions are required for it to exist. Let's examine the vital, identifying characteristics of a profession and see how, as a collection, they combine to create something distinct from the average vocation.

Shearing layers. Description[edit] The Shearing layers concept views buildings as a set of components that evolve in different timescales; Frank Duffy summarized this view in his phrase: “Our basic argument is that there isn't any such thing as a building.

Shearing layers

A building properly conceived is several layers of longevity of built components” (quoted in (Brand, 1994)). The layers are (quoted from Brand, 1994): Site This is the geographical setting, the urban location, and the legally defined lot, whose boundaries and context outlast generations of ephemeral buildings.
