Zuckerberg To Obama: Stop The NSA. Tumblr Mark Zuckerberg just posted a note to Facebook saying how upset he is with the US government's Internet-spying policies. It reads: As the world becomes more complex and governments everywhere struggle, trust in the internet is more important today than ever. The internet is our shared space. It helps us connect. It spreads opportunity. To keep the internet strong, we need to keep it secure. The internet works because most people and companies do the same. This is why I've been so confused and frustrated by the repeated reports of the behavior of the US government.

The US government should be the champion for the internet, not a threat. I've called President Obama to express my frustration over the damage the government is creating for all of our future. So it's up to us -- all of us -- to build the internet we want. Back in September, Zuckerberg told the audience at TechCrunch Disrupt that the US government "blew it" with the NSA.

Food stamps. White House Makes It Impossible For The Blind To Sign Petition Supporting Copyright Treaty For The Blind. Last week, we discussed a recent We The People petition at the White House, asking the administration to support the treaty for the blind, which would make it easier to access creative works for the blind by creating a few small "exceptions" to copyright law (i.e., returning rights to the public) for the sake of sharing formats that are accessible to the blind across borders. However, some blind advocacy groups have discovered that, if you happen to be blind/visually impaired, it's basically impossible to sign the petition . The glitch, the group says, is in those often annoying tests that require users to type in a set of numbers and letters to prove they are human. On the White House web site, blind users can select an audio version of the test, but the audio is incomprehensible, according to federation spokesman Chris Danielsen.

And if users want to send email notifying the White House about the problem, well, that also requires a computer-human test with garbled audio, too, he said. On June 10, 2013, President Obama announced his intention to nominate Jason Furman to become the next chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers. This is a big-time, highly influential post. So what kind of economist is Furman? One who thinks Walmart is the best thing since sliced bread. For Furman, Walmart is nothing short of a miracle for America’s poor and working-class folks. “By acting in the interests of its shareholders, Wal-Mart has innovated and expanded competition, resulting in huge benefits for the American middle class and even proportionately larger benefits for moderate-income Americans.”

Furman has championed the company’s low prices as a big boost to lower-income folks, and views Walmart jobs as good opportunities, never mind the low wages. Unsurprisingly, most progressives do not share Furman’s rosy view of Walmart. Shiva brings anti-GMO message to Kaua‘i - Thegardenisland.com: Local. The World According to Monsanto (FULL LENGTH) Monsanto Buys the Senate and Democracy Buys the Farm. When the U.S. government was first created, the founding fathers took great pains to distribute power across three branches of government to avoid the tyranny of concentrated power that most of them had crossed the ocean to get away from.

The idea was to create a system of checks and balances, to keep certain human tendencies like greed, corruption, ideological extremism and abuse of power from getting out of hand. They also made sure to keep the church and state at a safe operating distance for more or less the same reasons. Today, we may have drifted about as far away from those original intentions as we ever have in our history, though there may have been a couple of other times when we those stretched those principles nearly as far. During such times, industry, in fact, became a fourth branch of government, and money become a new religion, one that was not at all separated from the state.
