Accepting an office of profit under the Crown vacates the Member's seat. This process is used because members of the House of Commons are not technically permitted to resign. Party members did not hide their relief at seeing their bedrock support stay loyal after a series of debacles, from the resigning MP Denis MacShane's misclaimed expenses to the Ukip fostering row. MacShane's legacy of a 10,681-strong majority had been expected to crumble in the face of onslaughts by 10 other candidates, especially Ukip, Respect and the BNP. There was talk of a margin edgily close, with party insiders preparing defensive positions over a majority of 2,000 or less.

A study by the Electoral Reform Society (ERS) shows the elections, which recorded the lowest turnout in peacetime history, were poorly delivered and failed candidates and voters. Voters were left in the dark about who they could vote for, while candidates were kept away by huge deposits, unclear eligibility rules, vast electoral districts and high campaign costs. The ERS, which predicted the low turnout of only 15.1%, said the Home Office had explained that the elections on 15 November had been held to "empower the public" and give them a "direct say on how their streets are policed".

Yet a Populus poll in the last week of January showed only 11% could correctly name their local commissioner – fewer even than the 15% who bothered to vote. Republican state senators in Virginia, as well as the state’s Republican governor, Bob McDonnell, announced Friday that they would oppose a bill to change how the state awards its electoral votes in presidential elections.

The proposed legislation would have moved the state from awarding its electors on a winner-take-all basis to a proportional system based on Congressional districts. There have been rumblings of similar changes in other Republican-controlled states carried by President Obama in 2008 and 2012: Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Ohio and Michigan. And the chairman of the Republican National Committee, Reince Priebus, has voiced his approval of such measures. Although the Virginia bill now looks unlikely to become law, Democrats had expressed concern. Were they right to worry? They were. As Virginia demonstrates, the odds of all those states adopting a proportional system are probably small; some Republican lawmakers have expressed reservations about the idea.
