Scavenger Hunt - Solving Inequalities. One Variable Inequalities INB Pages (Algebra 1)

My Algebra 1 students just finished up a mini-unit on graphing and solving one variable inequalities.

One Variable Inequalities INB Pages (Algebra 1)

As usual, every new unit starts with a table of contents. Last year, I had students keep one table of contents at the beginning of their notebook. I like the individual unit table of contents SO much better! Almost all of my students keep them up to date! This foldable was inspired by a foldable I saw on Coffee Cups and Lesson Plans. Oh, the alligator. When I look at an inequality symbol, I just know its name. Since then, I've been teaching this hand trick to my students. I had my students create the examples for each inequality symbol. I teach my students that the order you write an inequality in matters.

I know, it's a little corny, but I told that "If you have to flip flop the sides of the inequality (to achieve the correct order), you must also flip flop the inequality symbol. " Lesson Activities. Absolute Value Inequalities and the Human Number Line. In most Algebra 1 courses, the topic of Absolute Value inequalities comes at the end of a longer unit on inequalities.

Absolute Value Inequalities and the Human Number Line

We shade our number lines, attend to our open or closed circles, and start to hit the wall a bit with the routine. So, as we begin to think about introducing absolute values, let’s get our students up and moving. Here’s how: Print out or scribble out cards with the integers -12 to +12, or use my handy integer card set. This will give 25 cards, and you can adjust the cards based on the size of your class.

In a hallway, or outside on a nice day, have students sit in order from lowest to highest. With students seated, the teacher holds up an inequality. One of my colleagues used this activity with his class recently, having students step forward if they were a solution. As the class builds the solution sets for the absolute value inequalities, have the observer describe the graph. Smarter Balance Sample. Applications with Inequalities. Solving Inequalities in Algebra 1

That's definitely not a term that we use everyday. Let's break this word down, so that we really understand it. The term equality means that something is equal (=). Our previous unit on solving equations dealt with equalities. The following math sentences are equalities: x + 2 = 10 x + y = 9 So... let's think about what the prefix in means in inequality. Yes, if something is not equal, then it is greater than (>) or less than (<). Definition of Inequality Inequality: Not equal We use the following symbols to show that a math sentence is not equal: < less than > greater than > greater than or equal to (the "or equal to" part is indicated by the line underneath of the > symbol) < less than or equal to (the "or equal to" part is indicated by the line underneath of the < symbol) Let's take a look at a few examples of simple inequality math sentences: Inequality Math Sentences 2 < 3 Read as: 2 is less than 3 x > 8 Read as: x is greater than 8 Top of the Page.
