Aborigines & the gold rush. Explorers and squatters had already disrupted traditional ways of life for Aboriginal people in the Victorian gold fields region.

Aborigines & the gold rush

Flocks of sheep and cattle had already changed the environment and now crowds of men left significant scarring on the natural landscape. Miners cut down trees to use for firewood, housing and the boards that reinforced tunnels. Mining turned clear streams into cloudy ones. Sometimes miners diverted whole creeks and rivers to use the water in a new area. Hill End. Hill End

According to the Empire 7 June 1872, "The streets were thronged by a motley crowd; the stores and places of business crowded with customers; the little theatre so densely packed by an admiring audience, that there was not what is facetiously called 'standing room,' and even the public-houses, whose name is legion, were crammed. Yet I saw less, far less, drunkenness than can be met with in any street in the metropolis after 10 o'clock at night.

Early images of the gold rush era and ''promotional'' shots of Sydney and Melbourne were commissioned by German-born entrepreneur Bernhardt Holtermann who, as every school kid knows, was credited with the discovery of Australia's largest gold nugget. They were taken by photographer Beaufoy Merlin and assistant, Charles Bayliss, with a make-shift dark room on the back of a horse-drawn carriage. They would exhaustively photograph houses and premises along the way using cumbersome and fragile large glass plate negatives. For many, one of the hardest things to bear was loneliness. If they had been brought to the diggings by their husbands, they were inevitably forced to spend many hours alone while their husbands worked to seek their fortune. This meant that they would frequently spend most of their time alone and have to face a range of dangers including snakes, illness and assault. An 1854 census of the Ballarat goldfields found there were 4023 women compared to 12,660 men living on the diggings and only 5 percent of these women were single. For many women of childbearing age, the prospect of pregnancy and childbirth was always a concern. 2408601.jpg (1529×2436)

Non-Indigenous people and land owners might consider land as something they own, a commodity to be bought and sold, an asset to make profit from, but also a means to make a living off it or simply ‘home’ [1]. For Aboriginal people the relationship is much deeper. The land owns Aboriginal people and every aspect of their lives is connected to it. They have a profound spiritual connection to land. Aboriginal law and spirituality are intertwined with the land, the people and creation, and this forms their culture and sovereignty. The health of land and water is central to their culture. Living in a city has its own challenges. We cultivated our land, but in a way differente from the white man. 3 different views of land.
