Renzo Piano: Current Work 1997. Architectural League of New York. The mission of The Architectural League is to advance the art of architecture.

Architectural League of New York

The League carries out its mission by promoting excellence and innovation, and by fostering community and discussion in an independent forum for creative and intellectual work in architecture, urbanism, and related disciplines. We present the work and ideas of the world's most interesting and influential architects and designers to New York, national, and international audiences through lectures, exhibitions, publications, and the worldwide web.

We identify and encourage talented young architects through competitions, grants, exhibitions, and publications. And we help shape the future of our built environment by stimulating debate and provoking design thinking about the critical issues of our time. External Links www.archleague.org. Sean Lally. “If you Build It, Will They Come?” – The Architecture Foundation Discusses Cultural Centers’ Impact on Cities

From the reuse of derelict infrastructure – like WORKac’s project in St. Petersburg’s New Holland Island - to the master-planning of cultural communities – like the design of Saadiyat Island in Abu Dhabi - to the development of an entire districts – like Foster + Partner’s master plan for the West Kowloon Cultural District in Hong Kong – the design of cultural centers that range in program, function and attraction have been a keystone in redeveloping the cultural impact of cities. The “Bilbao Effect” is still cited as proof that architecture has the capacity to revitalize cities centers and elevate their status in global design with these “architectural trophies“.

If you Build it, Will They Come? More on each project after the break.. The term “Bilbao Effect” was coined because of the effect that the Guggenheim Museum designed by Frank Gehry had on the post-industrial city of Bilbao in Spain. To reserve your place at this exclusive screening, RSVP to rsvp@architects.org with “Cool Spaces 4/10” in the subject line. On Thursday, April 10, at 6:00 pm, BSA Space will host an exclusive screening of the first episode of PBS’ new series, Cool Spaces! The Best New Architecture. Hosted by Boston architect Stephen Chung AIA, this American Institute of Architects–sponsored show goes behind the scenes in some of American’s most interesting public buildings.

About the show, Chung says: “My hope is that if we, as architects, can better explain what we do and why it’s important, it will increase interest in architecture and lead to a better designed, more sustainable, and more beautiful environment where everyone benefits.” Viewers will also discover how innovative and artistic concepts are translated into completed buildings. The screening will be followed by a question-and-answer session with Chung. BIArch. Patti Moreno: Urban Sustainable Living.
