24 Heures du Mans - Official Website. 24 Hours of Le Mans. The race is organised by the Automobile Club de l'Ouest (ACO) and runs on the Circuit de la Sarthe, a circuit containing a mix of closed public roads and specialist racing circuit meant to test two aspects of a car and driver: their ability to be quick and their ability to last over a 24-hour period.

Competing teams will race in groups called classes for cars of similar specification, while at the same time competing for outright placing amongst all of the classes. Originally, the race showcased cars as they were sold to the general public, which were then called Sports Cars, compared to the specialised racing cars used in Grand Prix motor racing. Over time, the competing vehicles evolved away from their publicly available road car roots, and today the race is made of two classes: enclosed-bodywork two-seat Prototype sports cars, and two classes of Grand Touring cars, which bear much closer resemblance to the high performance sports cars sold to the public.[2] 1966 24 Hours of Le Mans. The 1966 24 Hours of Le Mans was the 34th Grand Prix of Endurance, and took place on 18 and 19 June 1966.[1] It was also the seventh round of the 1966 World Sportscar Championship season.

It was the first time that Henri Pescarolo entered the race, a driver who went on to set the record for the most starts. Pre-race[edit] In 1966, the Ford GT40 Mk. II had become reliable. Shelby test driver Ken Miles managed to win at the 24 Hours of Daytona and the 12 Hours of Sebring with the big block Ford. Ferrari sent only two works P3s to compete against the Ford armada.

Race[edit] At the last pit stop, three Mark IIs were in front. At the finish, Ford decided to stage publicity photo between Miles/Hulme and McLaren/Amon with the No. 5 following, too. 1968 24 Hours of Le Mans

It was the tenth and final round of the World Sportscar Championship. The race was originally planned for June 15 and 16, but had to be delayed until September due to massive protests in France during May. The rescheduled race increased the chances of the Prototypes against the Sports, as the new Prototype cars had matured during the season. Pre-race[edit] Prior to the 1968 race, modifications were made in the run from Maison Blanche to the pit straight, involving the installation of the first Ford chicane to slow speeds along the open pit area. In 1968, the rules of sports car racing were changed to reduce speed. Enzo Ferrari was disappointed to have to take his P4s to the museum, and refused to compete for 1968, despite having an F1 engine. The competition was between Wyer's Ford GT40 and the new 3.0 L Matra 630, Alpine A220 and Porsche 908. 24 Heures du Mans. Deutsch:Die 24 Stunden von Le Mans sind ein berühmt Autorennen.
