But what do you do if the bank of mom and dad can't or won't subsidize your brilliant business idea? Consider crowdfunding. Websites like Kickstarter, IndieGoGo, and PeerBackers follow a crowd sourcing business model, wherein members sign on as backers and supply the capital necessary to start a business or product. In return, these investors typically receive tangible rewards like special access to a screening, a T-shirt or a sample of the proposed product.

PayPal has changed its policies regarding crowdfunding campaigns in order to protect itself when projects are cancelled. In a blog post on the PayPal website, chief risk officer Tomer Barel explained that anyone using PayPal for crowdfunding purposes will now have to explicitly state to its backers that there is a risk of the product they are paying for not being completed or delivered.

Zoom "PayPal has started to engage crowdfunding campaign owners early on to clearly understand their campaign goals and help them ensure their campaigns are compliant with our policies and government regulations," Barel said. "Together with the crowdfunding sites, we identify if campaigns are strictly fundraising or pre-selling merchandise. "We enable their campaigns without interrupting payments under the condition that the campaign owner is explicit and transparent to their contributors that there is no guarantee of delivery regarding the rewards being offered upon contribution. If possible, exit existing investments as soon as practical, without forcing a loss, or when the loans are paid off.” Regardless, Wells Fargo has now given employees the green light when it comes to participating in the peer lending space as lenders and/or borrowers, although that decision can be revisited in the future. Over the summer, 7.6% of America’s population was unemployed, 40% of which have been jobless for at least half a year. Without a doubt, these facts are distressing.
