For those new graduates pursuing careers in international humanitarianism (be it diplomacy, development, relief or human rights work), many are wondering what to do next in order to build a career? Herewith a bit of advice for the aspiring humanitarian - and it's not what you'd expect. Many people go into humanitarian or development work to "save the world".

While working to make the world a better place is a noble goal, it often sets up a problematic dichotomy between those doing the helping and those being assisted. This approach also obfuscates the links between wealth generation in some parts of the world and deprivation in others. Rather than charity, the need is for allies and collaborators in a common fight against injustice. Starting Date: Global Health Practicum and Internship Training June 16 to July 3, 2014 Expected Duration of Applied Internship: July 7 to August 16, 2014 (six weeks) Background: From 2010 to 2013 AMOS has worked in eight communities implementing household water treatment (HWT) systems, providing over 600 rural families with improved access to safe drinking water.

Summary: AMOS is offering an 8-week Global Health Practicum & Internship in Household Water Treatment in which interns will work as a team developing data collection materials and producing thoughtful analysis that will be used to better understand HWT system functions and usages and inform future implementation design. The report finds that proactive investments increasing efficient water use and re-use will both address growing problems associated with drought, flooding, and contamination and create jobs in a wide range of professions. The study identifies 136 different kinds of jobs involved in implementing sustainable water strategies, from plumbers to landscapers, engineers to irrigation specialists. Thirty-seven of these job types are also projected to have high growth in the overall economy, with each projected to have more than 100,000 job openings across industries by 2020.

The Pacific Institute identifies numerous sustainable water occupations that are accessible to workers without advanced degrees.
