Monanto is preparing to unveil a GMO wheat product.

(Shutterstock) Monsanto, the world’s largest seed company, renowned for its genetically modified organism (GMO) product lines, is preparing to introduce the first ever GMO wheat seed onto the commercial market. The herbicide-tolerant wheat is not legally approved for use anywhere in the world, but according to reports Monsanto is confident the product will be approved by the time it is ready for release in a few years’ time.

“Wheat is grown on more land area than any other commercial crop and is the most important staple food for humans. With demand for the crop expected to increase 40 percent by 2030, agricultural innovation is important in helping enhance the productivity, sustainability and profitability of wheat for farmers,” states the Monstanto GMO wheat platform. Monsanto has spent the better part of 15 years researching GMO wheat despite a scandal in 2013 when genetically modified wheat turned up at an Oregon farm. Monsanto Protection Act Dies in Senate. Monsanto Protection Act Dies in Senate

Department of Agriculture (USDA) budget bill last spring, dubbed the “Monsanto Protection Act,” will no longer be effective after Sept. 30 under a new stopgap government funding bill being drafted by Senate Democrats. Just last week, to the dismay of many concerned groups and individuals, the House approved the extension of the provision, which protects genetically-engineered (GE) seed manufacturers from litigation. The provision was included in last spring’s six month long continuing resolution (CR) spending bill The House approved a three-month extension to the rider in its own short-term Fiscal Year 14 CR spending bill, which was approved last week to fund the federal government past September.

Sen. OrganicLiveFood : Every 30 M one Indian #farmer... Indian Farmers Committing Suicide as a Result of Monsanto's GM Crops. Monsanto’s GM crops were supposed to feed the world hunger and starvation but instead the diverse sustainable organic agriculture was replaced with globalization, GMO crop failures and its threat to environment and human’s health, monopoly, farmer’s suicide and world wide control of seeds.

Indian Farmers Committing Suicide as a Result of Monsanto's GM Crops

Every 30 minutes an Indian farmer commits suicide as a result of Monsanto’s GM crops. In the last decade more than 250,000 Indian farmers have killed themselves because of Monsanto’s costly seeds and pesticides. Globalization and monopoly have forced farmers to buy GM seeds and since GM crops have become pests’ resistance, the farmers have no choice but to purchase Monsanto’s pesticide. Sometimes GM crops fail over and over again; GM crops also do not grow back again next year and every year farmers have to buy new seeds.

In 2008 Daily Mail called the continuous suicide of Indian farmers a “genocide” in human history. Jeffreymadwisc : #monsanto #slowkill #depopulation... Feds to farmers: Grow GMO beets or face sugar shortage

Introduced in 2008, the beets are the company’s most recent Roundup Ready product genetically engineered to withstand the direct application of the herbicide glyphosate. Immediately successful, they took over the sugar beet market within two years. By 2010, 95 percent of the sugar beets grown in the U.S. were Monsanto’s genetically modified variety.

This matters to us all because about 50 percent of white sugar sold here is made from sugar beets. In other words, unless that bag of sugar you just bought is labeled “Certified Organic” or “100 percent cane sugar,” it almost certainly contains sugar made from GMO crops. There was, of course, a reason for Monsanto’s success with sugar beets — and not just because it was able to leverage its market power to encourage farmers to adopt the new seed.
