Rat Tails - About Water Soluble Doxy

If your rat is starting to get sick, but he's not so bad off that his behaviors and desire have totally changed, this is the stuff for you. If you follow the prescribed dosage for pigeons on the packet, you're using the low-end dosage recommended for treating mild respiratory infections in rats. And if you treat it while the infection is still mild, you can generally prevent it from getting worse (decreasing the amount of potential great irreversable damage to your rat's lungs) and thus, you can save yourself a lot of money in vet bills. The water soluble doxy is the one in the pouch. Pet Rats: Pasteurella Pneumotropica, small red bumps, domestic rodents. Expert: Sandra Todd - 10/7/2008 QuestionQUESTION: Hi Sandra, I have been asking many many rat lovers and vets about this problem... my two boys (both around 1 year old) have been diagnosed with Pasteurella Pneumotropica after having a culture grown from a nose swab taken by my vet.

After at least a month, their condition hasn't changed. Rat Tails - Possible Nebulizer Configuration for Rats. Since nebulizers are designed for a more human audience, and since rats are considerably smaller, I had to think of some way to get the steam (and thus the medicine) in the rats without restraining them (because when they're really sick pinning them down is really one of the worst things you can do as it stresses them out) and while providing enough "air," enough space, to make them feel at least remotely comfortable.

Oh, and at the time we had 20-some sick rats so we wanted something big enough to do group-therapies :o) The Rat Report. Treating Rats with a Nebulizer By Debbie “The Rat Lady” Ducommun In most cases, oral medications are best for treating respiratory disease in rats, but in some rare cases, treatment with a nebulizer might help.

the Rat Report

A nebulizer is a special medical air compressor which vaporizes medications into droplets small enough to be inhaled into the lungs, delivering the medications directly to the site of respiratory problems. They are commonly prescribed for people with asthma. A nebulizer is a prescription item; you can’t buy one from a store without a prescription, but you can buy used ones on eBay. Depending on how a rat reacts to being in the chamber, treatments should last 10-30 minutes.

Drugs that can be nebulized include gentamicin, enrofloxacin, tylosin, aminophylline, albuterol, and acetylcysteine. The nebulizer comes in two parts, the air compressor, and a set of disposable plastic pieces that together are the actual nebulizer. For the last 1-1/2 years, I have been using albuterol breathing treatments to help treat my rats with pneumonia.

Albuterol is one of the medications used in the treatment of human asthma. I have found this to be very helpful in treating my rats, and have not lost one under age 2-1/2 to respiratory problems since I started using the treatments. I thought this might be something other rat lovers would be interested in knowing. Just a note of caution though, I do not have any research to back this up, and I am not a vet. My vet could not find any information on the use of albuterol in rats, but due to the extreme need of one of my rats at the time, she gave me a prescription for albuterol to use with my best judgment.

She’s been on Amikacin with fair results, but my husband thinks it is toxic and believes maybe she should be put to sleep. I’ve heard about a new drug called Zithromax. Do you know anything about it? I’m sorry to hear about your rat. Unfortunately, when a rat reaches that age and has respiratory problems, you’re probably looking at a chronic problem. Diphenhydramine HCL. The Rat Report-Respiratory & Heart Disease. By Debbie “The Rat Lady” Ducommun. Rat & Mouse Gazette: Herbal Help for Rat Respiratory Problems. An herb called echinacea may be able to help your rattie friends fight off respiratory disease. Numerous scientific studies indicate that this herb might improve immune system function in your rats, and that this in turn could lead to fewer and less frequent respiratory problems. Although it's important to exercise extreme caution when using "home remedies" with our rats, I believe that echinacea may be worth trying if you have rats with respiratory problems. Not only is there scientific evidence that it may help, but also - and this is just as important -- there appears to be very little risk.

All indications are that the chances of toxicity are low. Furthermore, the treatment is inexpensive: The herb costs about $9 for a one-ounce bottle of the tincture form (an extract in alcohol or another solvent), for an amount that would provide many months' treatment for many rats. Ironically, most of the research on echinacea seems to have been done using humans. Sally in the foliage. Dr. Doxycycline. Tetracycline Hydrochloride. Brands. Guaifenesin (OTC) Pseudoephedrine HCL.
