Sasaki: The Massachusetts Convention Center Authority (MCCA), in partnership with a Sasaki-led design team (including HR&A Advisors), conceived of the Lawn on D—a flexible, vibrant, and temporary urban space—to be an early arrival on D Street, setting the tone for civic impact and expressing the ambitions of a new district.

The Lawn on D by SASAKI

This new district, anchored by the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center (BCEC), occupies a critical mid-point between South Boston, the Innovation District and Liberty Wharf, and the Fort Point and Channel Center neighborhoods. This new district aspires to be interactive, flexible, technologically advanced, inspired by art and events, and inclusive of many constituents (residents, workers, conventioneers, tourists). MARKOWA – Polish architectural firm Nizio Design International has designed the Ulma Family Museum of Poles Saving Jewish People in Markowa, a small village in the south of Poland.

Sharply designed museum commemorates Poles helping Jews during the Holocaust

Like many other families, Wiktoria and Józef Ulma and their six children had been killed after hiding Jewish families in their home during World War II. Architect Mirosław Nizio is well experienced in creating evironments where the public is encouraged to look and learn. Spaces for history and contemplation, like the Mausoleum of the Martyrdom of Polish Villages or the Museum of the History of Polish Jews in Warsaw are part of the company’s DNA, with these being just two locations of this type that the firm has designed. The new Ulma Family Museum has a straighforward design far away from experimentation. OCULUS: Located on the shores of the Parramatta River at the northern end of the Rhodes Peninsula John Whitton Bridge Open Space provides a contemporary multi-functional open space under the historic John Whitton and Meadowbank pedestrian and rail bridges that links between the east and west sides of Rhodes.

John Whitton Bridge Open Space by OCULUS

The design of the public open space for the John Whitton Bridge project creates a simple spatial structure which seeks to provide maximum community benefit and cater for a wide range of recreational opportunity and flexibility. A simple palette of materials was used for the project, reflecting its past industrial character and respecting the heritage bridge abutments, consisting primarily of concrete with select use of corten steel.

The concrete elements included both precast and insitu forms of construction. The tilted panels and bollards are precast with the panels being formed and poured on site, then craned into position before a grit blast finish was applied. Mikyoung Kim Design: The ChonGae Canal Restoration Project is an ambitious redevelopment initiative that transformed the urban fabric of Seoul, Korea.

This design was the winning project in an international competition and celebrates the source point of cleansed surficial and sub grade runoff from the city at the start of this seven mile green corridor. The main competition requirement was to highlight the future reunification of North and South Korea. The project symbolizes this political effort through the use of donated local stone from each of the eight provinces of North and South Korea. The individual stones act to frame the urban plaza and the eight source points where runoff is daylighted and represents the unified effort in the transformation of this urban center. Place Darcy.
